In my technical writings “unconscious affect” is the means by which [pheromones](https://a314.com/shop/) influence behavior.

Interesting artical. I have found this to be true as well. When I was pregnant the smell of diesal fuel at the gas station or from a passing big rig made me throw up and get a headache. To this day when I smell it I still get that sick feeling. I dont end up throwing up but I will get a headache.

Rachel Herz is about to release a book that may better address such things as odors and social experience. I look forward to reading it. It is equally important to understand that odors, as chemicals, influence our the physical nature of our behavior, whether or not we are aware that we are being exposed to the chemicals. Olfactory and pheromonal chemicals are capable of “conditioning” our responses. Think “not tonight honey, I have a headache” and wonder a bit about how your response to a partner has been conditioned by pheromones.

This study may not mean anything at all. It may be the odor causing the problem, but it may be the social link. When they had a higher stress level, and smelled that odor, their pain increased. Therefore later when they smelled that odor their pain increased as well. The results may have been the same if it was color, a sound, or a particular person that was around the first time. It may also be a combination; the odor increased their pain, but only because they were stressed, however, it also caused the social reaction so that they did not also have to be stressed the next time they smelled it.

Tisha, your experience be not be related to the study at all. Many things can change when your pregnant and some go back when your done, but some things that changed stay that way forever (or can) and do not return to normal after birth or miscarriage.
