Here’s a little game.

I must admit I’m totally ignorant when it comes to this world, so I would like to ask you connosseurs, both men and women, what particular notes or even brands say to you instinctively about the man who’s wearing them. I realise that’s very personal. I hope my question isn’t to vague.

I’ve only just got into this world my self (not that I used yo smell or anything) but there’s a couple of things that have strick me so far.

I like scents that have a warmth to them. My three favourites so far are Monk by Michael Storer, Green Irish Tweed by Creed and Jubilation XXV by Amouage. These ain’t cheap but they are quality and all of them have this rounded quality to them that seems warm and particularly masculine to me especially upon drydown. I think it’s this quality that seems to say ‘this is a man’

The other thing I’ve noticed is that female friends very often seem to like scents that I don’t think suit me and seem to have different opinions on the same scents (warn a few days apart) depending on how much I wear. I’ve learnt that in most cases less seems to be more

I’m sure there are more seasoned clogne users out there, that might differ though.

I love warm blends on men, notes like Tonka, Benzoin, darker vanillas, frankincense and other resiny or incensy smells. A bit of musk is good in a blend. I also li8ke the smell of men being active. Like a guy who showered but then went to the gym a bit.

I like [Neroli](https://a314.com/product-category/scented/androtics-neroli/), but it can use something extra. It is basically a citrussy musky scent. I think it would be really nice with BPAl’S Crowley: _Infernal musk, red patchouli, lilac cologne, mahogany, lemon rind, oakmoss, leather, and vanilla husk._ This is a very sexyperfume for men, I’d love to smell it on a man. Dorian would also work well: _A Victorian fougere with three pale musks and dark, sugared vanilla tea._

GameScent gives me a headache, so that would not make me happy.

But I don’t personally know any men who wear pheros, so I dont really know how they smell on men.

Had a look at the Blac Pheonix Labs stuff, Butterfly. Would you say it’s worth getting ? I’ve seen mixed reviews.

I love their stuff! I am a woman so I don’t know how the male stuff smells on men but it is way better than alcohol based perfume.

It does need to work with your chemistry, not everything smells good on everyone. The best thing to do is to get two imp packs with a variety of scents so you can see what works for you. Then you can see what works well and buy two or three big bottles. It may be very different than your tasty in ordinary perfumes. For example, their floral blends are usually not so good on me, some go soapy. Their warm blends become glorious and sexy on my skin. Sweet candy and foody scents also are great, as are spicy blends.

I have many, many BPAL imps and a few 5mls. I agree with Butterfly about Crowley. It’s probably my favorite and if I ever hear of it being discontinued, I would stockpile a few. It seems to morph on me a lot, but is always very nice. Dorian is also a great scent, but a little too sweet for my taste.

Tangent, go to BPAL’s FAQ and forum, and look for a list of the male and neutral scents. Read some descriptions and reviews. I would recommend picking up a few imps that intrigue you. There are scents for different tastes. You may find one that you really like. Also, a great thing is that they’re not your standard Acqua di This or Eau de That, which are somewhat common even when they are good. You’ll actually have a rare and unique scent, especially if you layer, perfect for a signature scent.

Alphamale, yours is a tough question to answer. It’s so subjective. Your interest is in the impression you make, not your own taste. Go to [basenotes.com](http://basenotes.com), Fragrance Reviews, and read some reviews of the more popular ones on the right side. It should give you the views of the experienced. Get some ideas, then go and actually try out samples, **on skin** , not just a paper tester, maybe one sample on each wrist per visit. Get some opinions from people. Skin chemistry does play a role in fleshing out a scent, really giving it life, and some blend extraordinarily well with you and some don’t. A scent can say as the clothes you wear and your bearing. A man can wear a bespoke, expensive suit in a slovenly manner, or can wear a clearance off-the-rack suit like they exude class. So in other words, I just evaded the heart of your question as to what notes and brands say about the wearer. There are many at basenotes who can say it better than I can. Good luck.

Danny is giving you a lot of good advice.
I’d like to add that when you register to the forum, you can also use the recommendations forum and say what worked for you and what did not. That way, you can get advice from those who have similar skin chemistry.
The swap forum it good when you have things that don’t work. You can trade them for other imps. It is very lively and trading is so hun.

The same scents make a different impression when worn by different people, even if it smells the same on each body, congruence influences the impression. Lets imagine a warm, musky fougere. On a hard-bodied 22yo fighter, it might exude animal attraction, on a well dressed slim guy; elegance, on a middle aged paunchy guy; a daddsy vibe, on a tomboyish girl; genderbendery, on a feminine woman is sexy clothes; like she just made out with a guy.

You know, I really do love Crowley, but I feel that it is a lot like snake oil with a bit of added notes. In my opinion snake oil was perfect, so I usually just go for that one. There are some Bpal scents that are amazing and others that fall a bit short, but that’s natural specially taking skin chemistry into consideration. I think Butterfly is right and you should get a few imps to try them out. My reccomendations for a guy would be:

Snake Oil
Crowley
High Priest not to be Named (or something along those lines)
Spider (Simple, yet very pleasant lemmon scent)

Dapg01,

I love Snake Oil, and all the perfumes in the Snake family are good in their own right on the right person. I think women pick up subtleties more then men. I’d say Crowley is a distant cousin to SO, they both have red musk, but there are others more like SO. There is a whole Sake pit in the carnival and Snake Charmer is my favorite blend of all.

For a first imp pack for a man, I’d recommend the popular ones:
Snake Oil (Vanilla-musk unisex sexy)
Satyr (Red musk sexy)
Antony (Herbal and manly)
Dorian (Unisex, refined lusty)
Dracul (Black musk, dangerous, masculine)
Hellfire (Warm, smoky, leather)

Second pack I’d go for some that have different vibes from the first pack so you can see what notes work for you and maybe dip a toe in the voodoo blends:
Calico Jack (Sea, Spice)
Dee (Dry, masculine, refined)
Highwayman (Dark, floral bad boy)
Magus (Powerful, herbal spicy)
Wolf’s heart (Magic for courage)
The High Priest not to be described (Spicy and mysterious)

Crowley and Spider do not come as imps, but Crowley bottles are easy to swap.
