The “sillage” is the key, I think. If you’re more or less stationary, you could have a pherocloud around you; if there are air currents – gentle air currents – then your cloud might stretch along the current. If there are turbulent air currents, your cloud could be distributed chaotically.

But suppose you’re in a space without heavy air handling equipment working. Also, suppose you are moving around, from place to place. Now you’re leaving a more or less coherent sillage “trace” that follows your track. Every individual you pass by gets a whiff of your trace.

And don’t discount the pherocloud, either. You stand in place near the bar, and in five minutes the edge of your cloud reaches the door… someone walks in, and it seems impossible that they can ‘sniff’ you that far away, but in two steps they CAN inhale and from the beginning of that intake of breath to the end, they MIGHT sense a gradient that can pinpoint you as the source.

Note that perhaps not everyone will be able to do that, but some people could have more acute noses than others. It might be a mistake to judge the capabilities of your phero-audience by your own sniffing skills.
