Mating strategies differ for men and women. A woman invests considerable resources in carrying a fetus to term. It is in her best interest to have help in ensuring the survival of the infant. A man can invest as little as a tablespoon of semen in an infant, so the strategy of sowing his seed widely and letting those that will, survive, is open to him.

Women often wish to 1 - evaluate the status and power potentials of a mate, to see if he is capable of supporting the rearing of offspring, and 2 - establish an emotional bond to ensure he is not only capable but also willing to stick around. After all, the other females are interested in the same qualities and are competing for his resources.

The reproductive variability for women is less than it is for males. Almost any woman who so wishes can have as many children as her biology will support. Although men can theoretically have hundreds or thousands of children, they are competing for limited female resources. That means some men will be very successful, and some men will never reproduce at all.

Men use a couple of mating strategies. I’ve alluded to them in this old post.

> Biologists have noted two types of species with distinct physical and behavioral characteristics with regard to mating. Those are called [tournament species](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tournament_species)and [pair bonding](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pair_bond)species. In tournament species males compete for the opportunity to mate with females. They may compete via fighting like the elk, or via displays like the peacock. In pair bonding species like the swan a male and a female form a lasting pair bond. (In a very few species it is the female that competes to mate with the mal…

Women also use multiple strategies. Once a woman has established a pair bond she can then cuckold the male and still have a fair assurance that her offspring will survive.

It is interesting that the driving forces we evolved under have now changed significantly. Many or most women are well able to support themselves. Also, DNA testing makes determination of paternity possible. However, it may take millions of years for our biologies to understand that we are not still roaming the African savanna.
