Well, damn. I had no idea George Carlin passed. That makes me sad, I really enjoyed his comedy as a teenager, he had some very unique perspectives. I too feel that he became more bitter as he aged, but perhaps it’s also a function of him sticking to a style that worked so well for him. Sarcasm taken too far becomes bitter.

There are a lot of sad people all over today.

> I was never a huge fan (but I guess as far as American comedians go, he was the most watchable). He seemed to be getting angrier and more bitter the older he got- it went from gentle but cynical humor in his earlier years to nasty/borderline nihilistic stuff (BTW, I’ve listened to alot of his stuff on mp3’s). I know he had alot of drinking, drugs, and health problems. What’s sad is I don’t think he had alot of peace in this life. He could have used a few years to try and get his life together. [George Carlin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Carlin)
>
> I hate to be a party pooper, but there’s apparrently a dispute attributing the aformentioned quote to Carlin. I admit the writing style is similar, but I think the sentiments aren’t really his. For one thing I doubt George Carlin would say anything against smoking (didn’t he have a skit about that, airplane crashing and “smoke 'em if you got 'em?”). Who knows, could be a myth of a myth and maybe he did write it… he just didn’t want to own up to it…

> I’m not saying he wouldn’t necessarily agree with some of the sentiments, but George Carlin was very much a guy asking deep question and not having alot of answers, or at least not talking to much about them if he had any ideas. I guess that’s OK because we call somebody with answers “preachers” or “self-help gurus”, not comedians.

Good goddess 😮

You cant judge a man by wikipedia. Being so close to the city and a mail carrier for some of the rich and famous who work there but live in the burbs. I had the opportunity to know this man. He was deep, extremely intelligent and a keen observer of the world around him. He had deep kindness for people especially children.

Yes he did write the above mentioned quote, He lived by it as well.

I only got to know him briefly during the stay in my area but my life was enriched by it.

Sad to hear about George Carlin

I remember listening to him when I was a kid and growing up. He is an icon and was so funny!

You’re lucky to have known him, Tisha. He was **for real** , RIP.

He disavowed “The Paradox of Our Time” in no uncertain terms on his own website, though - see here under the title of the piece:

One of the more embarrassing items making the internet/e-mail rounds is a sappy load of shit called “[The Paradox of Our Time](http://www.xdude.com/paradox.htm).” The main problem I have with it is that as true as some of the expressed sentiments may be, who really gives a shit? Certainly not me."

LOL I know it says that on his website, but hanging in his den there is a large framed print of it. I mentioned I loved that and he mentioned his head was in his ass when he wrote it LOL His mail box said Moore head with the space in the word. We used to joke about it at the PO all the time.

I think he was embarrased by it and I really dont know why cause I think its great. Not that he gave a shit what his mail carrier thought LOL

Tisha, OK… I stand corrected, then. Like I said it did sound like his style, but the sentiments wouldn’t be part of his stage persona for sure, like he’d be uncomfortable with that.

George Carlin always struck me as a sensitive guy hiding behind alot of tough sounding, dark humor- like a viscious version of Alan Alda. At one point in my life I actually liked listening to him alot, but if you take too much cynicism to heart it will eat you up and you get nothing done. There’s also a bit of disingenuousness about his humor, like his “Fuck the Planet” skit he did. At least his dark humor payed the bills, though…

BTW I think I’ll copy and paste that “Paradox of Our Times”. Maybe put it up on the wall, maybe a better way to remember George Carlin. Now that he’s dead and doesn’t have to pay any bills, probably a better way to remember him for me now days. I’m sure he wouldn’t give a crap 🙂

Exactly. He was very sensitive and deep and I did get the same sense that he was hiding. From what I do not know. Maybe drugs will give you that aura.

Off subject a little, When I first started delivering mail I was really young and it was exciting to think I may get to see celebs once in a while. I just never expected them to anwser there front door themselves, LOL It always freaks me out. Of course I remain calm and professional but its still neat.

She is dead now but Coleen Dewhurst lived in the town I delivered when I first stated out at the PO and I had expresses for her that she had to sign for so her maid showed me into the foyar and I had to sit there with these two massive dogs and wait for her. I remember they drowled all over me LOL She finally came down and what a commanding women. She scared the shit of of you just with her presence LOL Talk about a alpha vibe. She was very nice though.

I cant tell you what Carlin used to call her but its one of the 7 words LOL 😮 snort

Even more off topic. Drugs wouldn’t give off that aura if they were legal. Not making a debate out of it, just stating that logically, if they weren’t illegal, their use wouldn’t have to be hidden.

I don’t think it’s drugs. One of my uncles is about like George Carlin in his humor, but more like in his younger days (my aunt would probably wash his mouth out with soap if he went too far). He is a sensitive guy, but also a Vietnam vet that delt with alot of pain. It’s just a generational thing, I think older guys with alot of passion find ways to hide it. Because well, if you are a certain age the only men with passion were not real men.

And if drugs were legal, Phya? Umm… haven’t you heard of World of Warcraft, Everquest (both legal and both highly addictive), and babies baking in the sun in carseats? People find all kinds of ways to self-destruct, legal or not.

Oh, so you are a postal worker. I have thought about doing this myself but for many years I think my eyesight would have held me back, now it might be different as I do have a driver’s license. I wouldn’t mind working in a mail-room. My grandfather was a postal worker. I look into to see if they are hiring every once in a while, though.

Working in NYC, I get to see celebs a lot on the streets, either just walking around or taping movies or shows, The actors from Law & Order are really common, I have seen James Gandolfini and others from Sopranos, well I will not list the rest, too many, but after a while you realize they are just normal people.

Most are pretty cool, and I met Mr. T once in a night club and got to hang out with him. 🙂

I have played both World of Warcraft and Everquest, and never got addicted like a drug. I would not call those drugs at all. Drugs are a total different ball game compare to MMORPG.

I wasn’t commenting on people self-destructing. What I meant was that other than the risk of social ostracism, I wouldn’t ever need to hide the fact that I spent 16 hours yesterday playing WoW or EQ. However, I couldn’t go talk openly about doing coke with my gf all night, or taking shrooms all weekend, or even smoking weed everyday. If I were a grower/synthesizer I couldn’t ever talk openly about my ‘hobbies’. Other than my friends or other people in the culture, it would be a bad idea to go mouthing off about my drug activities, only because it is illegal. If it were legal, I could talk about it without fear of legal ramifications. Thus, the aura of ‘hiding’ that Tisha alluded to.

I think some people turn to hard drinking or drugs to try and escape painful or unpleasant feelings. That wouldn’t change if it was legal or not. But otherwise, I agree.

Tisha, that’s amazing! I’m envious as hell.

His loss is inconceivable. To me, he really was the last (honest-to-goodness) comic standing, a certifiable genius, and his passing represents an era met with an inappropriate, untimely demise. We need someone like him now more than ever!

I’d like to believe that there were (or will be) someone to fill his shoes, even if eventually, but right now that just seems like wishful thinking.

Well, I got to see him a couple of times, anyway…

> I think some people turn to hard drinking or drugs to try and escape painful or unpleasant feelings. That wouldn’t change if it was legal or not. But otherwise, I agree.

Of course, that’s in fact my major problem with the politics behind narcotics control. It’s under the guise of ‘protecting the people’ from the ‘threat’ of drugs when there are thousands of alcoholics, people dying from liver cancer, people dying from lung cancer, or people dying from health complications due to unhealthy diets/lack of exercise. On top of all of that, the ‘legal’ drugs we provide have multiple side effects that are (from what I have seen) usually worse than the primary symptoms they are trying to ‘cure’.

I’ve had a friend kill himself because he couldn’t take the side effects the pills the pharmacists were shoving down his neck. Another friend of mine hates the Seroquel they prescribe him, to supposedly help him stay in ‘control’. It quiets him down during his manic phases, undoubtedly, but it also leaves him in a deep sleep, or too lethargic to do anything. The list goes on, I haven’t actually met anyone that was well adjusted to prescribed medication.

Anyways, that’s a whole different can of worms, and I agree, people will find ways to escape no matter what. In fact, that’s really what ‘entertainment’ industry amounts to. An industry hell bent on distracting you from all the other bullshit you can’t stand looking at, making it easier for you ignore all of it.

I feel trying to remove or alleviate ‘escapism’ or trying to eliminate what we consider ‘bad’ methods of ‘escapism’, is an attempt at ‘escapism’ in itself. We are essentially trying to ‘escape’ the fact that we have a nation of semi-well adjusted, semi-mal adjusted individuals all fucked up on synthetic drugs, processed foods, marketing dreams, and an overload of entertainment.

Money doesn’t make life painless, I don’t understand why people think using specifically targeted synthetic drugs are any better than non synthetic drugs that happen to be illegal. In the end, we’re all just trying to alleviate some pain, usually at the cost of some other pain. Prescription drugs have side effects, illegal drugs have the possibility of legal trouble.

We’re all just trying to get by as happy as we can, if we could see that and let people find happiness in their own way, this would be a much simpler world, but I suppose part of the madness is part of the experience of life.
