Congrats to the Mavericks. Though they’re rivals of my team I’m glad Jason Kidd could add the exclamation point to a Hall of Fame career. With no basketball, football, or hockey shouldn’t be long before the retirement speculation begins. Crazy to think they won it without possibly their second best player and only legit 2nd scoring option in Caron Butler. Not to mention the other guys they were missing like Roddy B. Really reminds me of Green Bay’s recent Super Bowl victory.

Also nice to see the Heat lose. They didn’t show the effort down the stretch.

Congratulations to all the fans whose team won 🙂. Looks like this winter the NFL will be on Hiatus. After all $93 million isn’t enough for those types of working conditions.

I noted that same lack of effort. It seems as though they caught that Laker SOMETHING HAS SECRETLY GONE WRONG IN THE LOCKER ROOM bug.

Those working conditions include life ending and/or permanently debilitating injuries along with extreme hours, constant media scrutiny, and national criticism. Their salaries are based off league revenue of an extremely popular game and are largely unguaranteed. Players are villified, not for wanting more return on the ultimate investment of their body, health, and lives but for that return to remain the same as the game actually becomes even bigger and more profitable. But the owners are seeking more for less. They are already richer than the players will probably ever be yet it’s somehow acceptable that they are demanding more money when they are not who the fans are paying to see.

Now the NBA labor negotiations are a different beast entirely.

The owners are the owners of the team. Name one business anywhere that you can go in and say I want to see your books and base my pay on what you bring in. The players chose their profession and can walk away if they are afraid of disabilities. No one is forcing them to do anything!

Here’s the best part too. The players are in it completely for themselves. That’s why every year when they have an opportunity to set up a fund to help retired players who are now broke (average money lasting after NFL career: 3 years) they flat out turn it down.

For a family of four to go to an NFL game you’d have to spend a months salary on average. Yet those guys you are paying so much to see are out driving drunk, robbing, shooting, drugs. People all over are losing their homes, their jobs and these guys are saying hey $295K isn’t enough as the base salary. Of course as I mentioned they have options, they can do something else. You either take the risk as acceptable with the pay or you walk away. They chose to take the risk and whine about it. Albert Haynseworth!

Sorry but when US soldiers get like what $30K a year if lucky for a more dangerous job sure puts things in perspective.

Two excellent articles by Malcolm Gladwell (bestselling author of The Tipping Point, Outliers, and Blink) regarding the ongoing NBA lockout.

Remembering this conversation between Steve and myself, I chose to post it here rather than making a new thread. Both are fairly short and definitely worth reading if you have any interest at all in the NBA, basketball, sports, economics, etc.

[Malcolm Gladwell on the NBA lockout - Grantland](http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6874079/psychic-benefits-nba-lockout)

[Malcolm Gladwell on Bruce Ratner and the Barclays Center - Grantland](http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7021031/the-nets-nba-economics)

This is one quote listed in the sources which I find especially poignant:

_"This was the point of [my first Grantland piece](http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6874079/psychic-benefits-nba-lockout). An NBA franchise is not really a business. It’s a luxury good, like a piece of art, which means that making calculations about profits and losses makes no sense. Since then, TrueHoop’s indefatigable Henry Abbott dug up this gem from Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert. It dates back to before the lockout. Gilbert, let us recall, has been one of the ringleaders of the players-are-greedy brigade._

**‘To me, NBA franchises are like pieces of art. There are only 30 of them. They aren’t always on the market, especially a franchise that would have been such a natural fit. … If you just looked at the Cavaliers in terms of revenues, profits and balance sheets — and you paid this amount for it — people would say ‘You’re insane! You’re nuts.’ But if you look at all the tentacles, the impact on our other venues, it makes tremendous sense. We have now opened a Cleveland office [of Quicken Loans] and that’s tremendously successful. Our employees love it that we’re associated with the Cavs and can come to games — that helps us attract and keep better people. There are a lot of nonprofit things that can be done with pro sports. It brings an unbelievable amount of excitement.’**

_What’s the matter, Danny? Don’t like your Rembrandt any more?_"

P.S. Cowboys suck 😉😃🆒
