So in the A314 or IG thread K-Train posted, there’s been a solid discussion about Alpha traits.

What do YOU perceive to be alpha traits?

To me, an alpha is a leader. Someone who is cool and calm under stress, projects an air of earned respect around him, and tries to be inclusive of his entire environment.

I think some of the PUA stuff has lightly skewed the ‘alpha’ ideal as well as maybe adding connotation to it in the sense of an AMOG that there’s a level of douchebaggery. I don’t think this is the case in a TRUE alpha.

What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks for making this thread Reclipse.

To answer the question, I agree with calmness being an alpha trait but I think toughness, mental and physical, are both alpha traits. Mental toughness meaning that even in hard times they are able to keep a cool head, and refrain from going apesh!t like a wild baboon. Physical meaning they have the look of a healthy, not necessarily buff, but healthy individual.

When I think of a true alpha male, I tend to think of the character Jack from the TV show Lost. You know a born leader, who is well respected and has a propensity to bring people together rather than divide them.

I really hate how people these days people have given the alpha male title to these muscle bound steroid pumping beta-males, call me crazy but I’ve always felt there’s something more to being an alpha male than being a misogynist who gets laid a lot.

Calm and collected, but as an outside male must percieve a sense of status just by body language as well as social dialogue.

I don’t have to escalate anything, but I will finish it.

I am me, this is my space, have a problem leave. Hurt friends or girls I am here with “I” am then your problem.

Not an asshole, but a protective calm, albeit subdued gentlemen.

I agree 100% on this. Being alpha is means you are a leader, and being a leader is an earned position of status. It could be as loafty as a CEO, the director of a symphony or as simple as a the top dawg of a street gang or sports team. People oft confuse the airs wannabes and badboys put on with actual alphas. Trouble is, they lack the wisdom, experience and character to do anything beyond lead a bunch of clueless off a cliff. True alphas don’t have to act tough or threaten to get people to obey and follow. Those whom do these things are insecure and are trying to prove they’re something they’re not. People want to follow an alpha because of their leadership skills and strength of character.

When I think of Alpha I think of a duck swimming. Above the water the duck appears to effortlessly cruising along. Under the water his legs are churning like a steam engine. An alpha’s exterior is cool, calm, and collected but his mind is sharp and constantly aware of everything around him. Just my 2 cents.

The thing is, if you look at something like a wolf pack, the Alpha gets there by fighting, and his first prerogative is mating. I’ve always viewed Alphas overly aggressive, small head thinkers.

Actually, I think the OP is asking about human alpha definition. The alpha male in the dawg family is but a distant relative to the human alpha. Our massive brain and accompanying social structure has made the role of human alpha extremely different. Material wealth, political power and social influence has replaced brute strength thousands of years ago (the most power alphas tend to be old and frail however ruthless they may be). However, if you’ve ever lived around pack animals, you’d know most of them avoid fighting and use it as a last resort. Usually they maintain their alpha status with posturing and ritualized behavior.

In the case of the greatest human alpha males, they wield authority and influence by delegating power and tasks, and by control manipulating the social structure around their domain. Think union boss, prominent politician, powerful businessman, etc. These types of men don’t get to be an ubber alpha by being “small head thinkers.” On the contrary, they are smart, creative and able to visualize and implement their goals on a massive scale. And they achieve those goals with ruthless and unrelenting fervor.

The “small head thinkers” are the Neanderthal thugs on the sidewalk kicking geek ass and ripping them off. They will never have a position of power or leadership. Too stupid. They’ll spend their entire life as a wannabe and end up dead or in prison while young.

You’ve got a point there! I guess working for “a greater good” isn’t part of the alpha male definition then, which still makes them “small head thinkers”, doesn’t it?

That is gross stereotyping based on a few bad apples. How many union bosses, politicians, or CEOs do you know? I bet exactly zero. I personally have known many for years. In fact, they are my friends, neighbors and colleagues. Not a one could ever be called a thug. The president of my faculty union is a longtime friend and is the biggest bleeding heart do-gooder known to man. He’s professor of religion and doesn’t even wear freakin’ leather so animals won’t be harmed. And yet he can stand up to the state & board of regents and win our contract needs like a warrior. Sure there are the bad ones whom garner all the press. What about the mostly good ones you never see on CNN?

Small minded thinkers embrace stereotypes like all men can’t write due to an inherently small verbal center in the brain, all physicians are money grabbers, women are weak, or all college students are lazy. Small minded thinkers don’t think for themselves and, like those street thugs, will never amount to anything if they don’t wakeup and actually use the stuff between their ears.

^^^I’ve got to say that is pretty harsh Gegogi but unfortunately true.

At the same time though, I wouldn’t consider anyone small-minded unless they proved it to me. I like to believe that ALL people have the potential to learn and awaken to the possibilities.

Like in the Matrix. Neo wasn’t small minded at the beginning of the trilogy, but he was just oblivious to the truth. It wasn’t really his fault. He later was shown the truth and even though it took a while he embraced it and his mind became more open gradually.

At the same time though, if someone is shown proof but still doesn’t believe then THAT’s when I say they are small-minded. However, I still believe you’ve made a good point, just adding my 2 cents.

Perhaps you should familiarize yourself with the use of the abbreviation ‘lol’ that can either precede or follow some humorous, i.e. something said in jest. Might help you keep your foot out of your mouth.

I happen to know and interact with CEOs and former CEOs from companies as big as Cessna, and one of the worlds largest builders of paper converting equipment, down through investment management, class action research firms, wireless internet systems and maintenance, etc. Not to mention I’m one myself. Most of them are great people, some others I have had to deal with are pompous asses.

Years ago when I still worked for someone other than myself I had a shop steward file a grievance on my behalf. Never bothered to tell me though. I didn’t think the issue was that big a deal, and never would have signed off on it. Who got caught between the Union and management? Me, and all because of shop politics.

I have a very strong dislike of politics even though my Grandfather was president of a local county Democratic Party for a number of years before he passed. I’ll leave it at that.
