Dopamine is not a chemical, it’s a neurotransmitter, and the original poster does NOT have a dopamine deficiency. Dopamine content of the brain is stable until age 45, and then decreases linearly about 13% every decade. A significant decrease of dopamine results in Parkinson’s not a “beta personality”
Neurotransmitters are endogenous chemicals which relay, amplify, and modulate signals between a neuron and another cell.
ADHD is something that is caused in young people as a result of dopamine deficiency.

You can get more research from pubmed.com by searching for ADHD+dopamine. I know that ADHD in young adults creates a beta-personality because I have it. The difference that ADHD medication (all of which stimulate the brain to produce more dopamine) makes to your life and personality is something that I have experienced personally.
Hi Xiphoid, Thats interesting to know. Is there a way to combat the Decrease as we age?
Personally, I prefer marijuana of the sativa strand. This type keeps you awake and alert, whereas indicas make you drowsy and want to sleep ![]()
I love the fact that you not only quote Wikipedia (not exactly known for it’s scientific roboustness), but you also must be the oly person in the world who knows “the cause of” ADHD. Medical science certainly doesn’t yet. The only thing known for sure is that the main component is genetic, and that there is an involvement of receptors and dopamine. But dopamine deficiency doesn’t cause ADHD.
That’s not scientific fact, that’s purely anecdotal ![]()
Many people have ADHD/ADD, myself included. I also have a degree in Neuropharmacology, and worked in medical research in that field before going into clinical medicine. I don’t have time right now to explain the in’s & out’s of what’s known & what’s not in terms of dopamine (I’m on my way out to celebrate my birthday) but I’ll post back later ![]()
