MONTPELIER, Vt. – At Riverwalk Records, the all-vinyl music store just down the street from the state Capitol, the black “US Out of Vt.!” T-shirts are among the hottest sellers.
But to some people in Vermont, the idea is bigger than a $20 novelty. They want Vermont to secede from the United States – peacefully, of course.
The American revolution was where the colonies broke from England, the Civil War was where some southern states attempted to secede, which is the subject of the thread, Vermont wanting to secede.
Ah… i always thought that the civil war had somthing to do with slavery… suddently makes it seam a lot less gloriouse…
well, if they are dissilusioned by the current gov, they should vote for Ron Paul for president at the 2008 elections
(id wish we had some1 like him over here, he is the first politician i’d actually be happy to vote for, and not just select the least bad out of a whole bunch of croocks)
The slavery issue was being used as a war tactic to disrupt the south, it was a secondary issue. Even though Lincoln is called the “Great Emancipator”, if it would have kept the Union together, he wouldn’t have freed the slaves.
The American “War Between The States” was more of an issue concerning the form of central government of the US should take.
After the Revolutionary war (for self-governance/independence) some wanted the US to be more like a monarchy, some wanted some form of democracy, etc. (and not necessarily the “representative” form of democracy in place at the moment).
Possibly due to the original countries of origins of the residents of the Northern and Southern states the preference seemed to be for a “Federal” form of government to prevail in the North (strong central government whose laws took precidence over the state’s laws) vs the opposite preference in the South for a “Con-federal” (con=“opposite” therefore “Confederate” states) for a weak central form of government with the state’s laws taking precidence over the central government. This is the basis for many of the “state’s rights” arguments we still hear today.
Like Mtnjim sez, slavery was more a side political issue. Gave a “moral” slant, and the “emancipation” was indeed probably designed more as a disruptive tactic than anything really “moral” perhaps sad to say. More to weaken the Southern economy by disrupting the labor force. I understand there were some in the northern states that also practiced so-called “indentured servitude” which in some ways was just another form of “slavery.” The subject is easily turned into an emotional “hot button” issue by the politically motivated.
Just some personal thoughts/opinions. Not really something related to pheromone use, is it…
No offense but you were just corrected on what the civil war was about, the last thing you need to give is voting advice.
dissilusioned = disillusioned
gloriouse=glorious
The Emancipation Proclamation was a goal of the war in order to heighten the moral playing field of the Union. By this it kept France and Briton from intervening on the side of the confederacy, and also allowed the north (Union) to recruit blacks into there ranks (usually as support, but also as infantry (see:“Glory”). A action the south (confederacy) dared not do. the emancipation or “freeing of the slaves” was originally a Republican party goal (before the war), the secession of the south was in part due to documents and citations from Jefferson (a presumed right) and a fear of lose of control to the federal government and economic strength (due to the abundance of agricultural industry in the south).
I’m not trying to be a jerk but I live in IL. were some of the most politically and historically inept people in the world live, and every day I have to hear what some half wit college students think.
