One reasonable understanding is that pheromone molecules bind to the olfactory bulb very high in the nasal passages and close to the brain. This causes firing nerve impulses that affect moods in the brain itself. Fragrance both covers the mone smell and aids diffusion of the mone into the air. The olfactory bulb sends olfactory information to be further processed in the amygdala, the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and the hippocampus where it plays a role in emotion, memory and learning.
