Also have been adding (a lot of) Lactobacillus Reuteri… very fascinating critters… they manufacture agents that control inflammation and also act as natural antibiotics (bacteriocins)… I started taking a bunch of these around midday, 30 minutes pre-lunch… hafta say, in combo with everything else, my innards just plain feel better than they have in ages, like I’m properly nourished, no bloating at all, no feelings of overfullness or gut tightness… Nature’s Way is the only US manufacturer… in whatever probiotic you take, it it really important they you select a enteric coated capsule… regardlress of what’s on the label, stomach acids will destroy about 99% of most lactobacilli… and not all capsules ARE enteric coated… the second thing is that enteric coated capsules have to be taken on an empty stomach about half an hour to 45 minutes before eating or well between meals or before going to bed… third thing is to make sure you have a good store that sells only fresh, generally refrigerated product… Reuteri has to be kept refrigerated…
If you follow all that, normally you’ll feel the new lactobacilli going to work very quickly once they hit your small intestine, in me it is sort of a warm, relaxing, everything in balance feeling… so I strongly suspect that this complex mixture of organisms is a major piece of the digestive process, and they’re transforming food into many nutrient elements that the body is evolved to deal with with maximum efficiency…
Probably the right balance of intestinal flora is as important as any external nutrient… I definitely find weight loss vastly easier now, I don’t have to struggle to resist overeating… so maybe we overeat in a desperate attempt to get fractions of these little understood factors that the right bacteria produce naturally ?
Check this piece of science out ! What it is saying, in effect, is that “histiocytes”, cells that exhibit irritation and inflammation effects, are actually reduced by the presence of Reuteri:
“Gastric mucosal histiocyte numbers were reduced and duodenal B-lymphocyte numbers were increased by L. reuteri ATCC 55730 administration. Furthermore, L. reuteri administration induced a significantly higher amount of CD4-positive T-lymphocytes in the ileal epithelium. Dietary supplementation with the probiotic L. reuteri ATCC 55730 induces significant colonization of the stomach, duodenum, and ileum of healthy humans, and this is associated with significant alterations of the immune response in the gastrointestinal mucosa. These responses may be key components of a mechanism by which L. reuteri ATCC 55730 exerts its well-documented probiotic effects in humans.”
