Pheromone Receptors

I was in a Physiological Psychology class last semester, and I remember the professor mentioning that human pheromones are the hot topic in the olfactory system. He said that no one has really been able to synthesize them correctly and successfully yet (he clearly hasn’t heard of androtics :stuck_out_tongue:), and that some studies show that only half of all people even have pheromone receptors. I was wondering if anyone could confirm this for me.

Thanks!

I recommend you go to the studies section… I know I’ve posted a few studies showing that people react over statistical error to pheromones… now how well this company creates them is its own determination… but Pheromones are real and have been used well enough in psy studies…

He probably was talking about the jacobsons organ or the VNO which is non functional and non existent in some humans and was once believed to be the receptor for mones as it is in other mammals. We are highly evolved mammals though.

We know there are other pathways that pheromones take in humans to reach the brain and trigger the neurotransmitters they just havent isolated those pathways yet. Of course something could damage those pathways so there is a chance some people would not be able to process scent and thusly pheromones. Just because those pathways are not fully understood does not indicate that we do not communicate pheromonally though or that we have not been able to successfully synthesize them .

Most studies show consistent changes to the nervous system and chemistry of the brain when exposed to not only pheromones but general scents. This proves basically that there has to be alternative pathways for processing.

Teachers and scientists will debate with those who use mones and believe they are a major part of how we communicate till those pathways are more clear. So I wont say your teacher is wrong but he can only teach what he knows and is open to.

Perhaps if he actually experienced using them he would more open to the possibility that there is more going on pheromonally then science has uncovered yet.

Thanks for the info, Tisha. And I will check out those articles you mentioned, Kendall.

This is an interesting topic, don’t know much about the receptors but there is something that Androstenone, Androstanone, Androstadienone, Beta Androstadienol all react on the OR7D4 receptor. Not everyone can smell it, for some it even smells pleasant, vanilla like while others find it having a urine/sweat smell.
