Re-upload your avatars and user pics

Hi guys,

There appears to be room in the template, so I increased the size of your user pics… what vbulletin calls an “avatar” (like we’re playing a big pheromone based D&D game!).

You can re-upload your pics if you want, so you can have a more dramatic impact.

Since there appears to be room, I might increase the size yet again. Depends on feedback I get. (If, say, Rbt says it won’t fit on his 1981 320x200 pixel Atari 800 or Timex Sinclair screen that he somehow hacked to surf the internet, well, I just won’t have the heart to do it!)

Well, I also still have a Commodore 64 or two as well as an Atari (and a couple Atari ST’s). Plus my trusty “black” Apple ] (Bell & Howell educational version). A few XT’s and a PS/2. Some Wyse 286’s… So I should be covered. I suppose I should do an inventory. Can’t remember what all I have…

Shoulda bought that SOL20 when I had the chance…

Oh yes, there are those Laser 128’s and the “Woz” version Apple as well…

Man, sounds like SOMEONE has been perusing the M.I.T. swapfest again. (man, that brings back memories! Where else can you get oscilliscopes, classic computers, EMP generators, Tesla coils, Faraday cages, frequency counters and other wacky stuff… as well as all the weirdest geekazoid conversation with future technology luminaries that you can ever hope to have… for just pennies on the dollar. whoo!! call me a big nerd, but that’s my idea of one kind of fun!)

Were ever blessed enough to have an Amiga? I remember when those first came out… and how they made the Max Headroom and other jaw dropping animations real time on the Amiga 1000 model from 1985.

I didn’t think much of Commodore before that, but those were amazing, revolutionary machines. I wish technology still evolved at that sort of heart quickening rate. Those were exciting times for technology. (no doubt, this has influenced how I try to run this company!)

Amigas were nice, but I settled for an Atari ST. I was in the computer retail biz and was able to get ST’s wholesale… Had an inside contact at Bell & Howell for the black Apple. Most of the rest I’ve aquired from various sources over the years, usually for little cost or free. We also have a number of large corporations locally that got custom IBM’s etc that eventually ended up in the “scrap” pile and that people brought me, and I went in on a warehouse purchase of misc assst of a local computer maker. Got stuff here that’s R&D and FCC samples, items that were never sold in the US, etc. And the local military base used to have DOD sales. Got a couple nice osilloscopes that way. Do I have the time to play with it all and space for it? NOOOOOOOO.

I have an Amiga and a ZX30 and ZX31 (the latter is still boxed) by Sir Clive Sinclair sitting in the loft, and “The Man” is aye telling me to get them onto Ebay.

I used to love the Amiga - especially for games. “The Man” and I are both massively into video games. I am an RPG addict, and he likes um…anything apart from RPGS, to be honest!

I look at my Wii sitting under the tree now (I ain’t allowed to open it until Christmas day - boo! >_<) and marvel at just how far we have COME in terms of technology, in a relatively short timeframe.

Super famicom anyone? Yep. Got one of those in the loft too, and STILL use the SNES regularly in fact - although I modded my Xbox and then the XBox 360 so it would play all the ROMS of SNES and NES games I have.

I kinda mod everything if it requires it, as I cannot abide PAL, and always either buy direct from the US or Japan, then import, to get the NTSC benefits - or mod it all myself..

Anyway, my avatar won’t seem to upload any differently, so I’ll stick with this one until more photos are taken at Chrissy time.

Ail

Wasn’t that a ZX80 and ZX81?

Which Amiga?

Oooh, how I used to love Infocom games (the text adventures) back then. Wonderful stuff. Some Sierra games, too. Cheeky!

On the graphical side of things, I remember Altered Reality being fun… but I think was on the Atari ST?

There were so many pretty games on the Amiga, it’s honestly hard to remember them all. I don’t remember there being enough RPGs, though, aside from Infocom from Sierra (which were on most computers back then).

What games did you use to like?

Yeah, the controller is amazing! An air katana… wow!

The graphics bug me a little, though. Some of the early games I saw for the Wii on the store definitely no better than the Amiga (the tennis one).

I’m sure that’ll change, however, as I understand that it’s more powerful than a Gamecube. (and that CERTAINLY had better graphics than the Amiga!)

You modded your xbox! Wow. See, that’s what I love about some European women. You can actually do real things, and that is very rare in America.

Honestly, there are few phrases as attractive to me than hearing a lovely young lady talk about how she resoldered her computer, or built something new for their room, or… heck… a kit car. I knew an English woman who did that.

All of it, I think is absolutely incredible, and I have no idea why European women do these things, yet American women don’t. American women have the ATTITUDE that they do, even though they don’t (or it’s very, very rare). It’s odd.

You better watch out, or you’ll start getting anonymous love letters! I’m sure I’m not alone in my love of strong, “kick ass” women.

I am as the Scots say Michael, " As thron as the morn’s first Starling."

I will NOT let people help me do something practical, until I have exhausted each and every way of doing it myself, and still fail - THEN I will ask for input..THEN I will ask for help.

I have very serious M.E (Myalgic Encephalitis) with added complications, as a result of years in an abusive marriage, , which one day may put me in a wheelchair, but I am DAMNED if I will let it do that to me without me kicking and screaming and fighting it off, every step of the way.

I often have to literally take a month off from teaching or whatever, and as I could never let my brain or my hands be idle, I taught myself to mod Xbox, PS2, Playstation, Gamecube and SNES.

I also went online and found out how to mod all Sony Ericsson mobile phones since 1997, all Samsungs since 2002, and many Nokias. I enjoy that kind of thing very much, and it gives me a HUGE sense of achievement when I get it right.

I know a lot of girls think I’m nuts, and to boot, I resemble a life-sized Barbie doll approx. 92% of the time, but I rail against female stereotypes so much, and just feel so much better being self-sufficient.

I only passed my driving test 4 years ago, because before that, I had no motivation to drive, and my life was hell, so it just didn’t happen.

When I came out the other side of everything, and my family found out what had been going on for almost 8 years, without their knowledge, My Dad who is a newly-retired College Principal, started to remake MGs and Mazdas (classic ones only) from scratch, and one day he turned up at my house in this absolutely gorgeous MG midget in Fire red, with alloys, etc. and said:

“Okay Ail, enough is enough. You need to be able to drive.” “Pass your test, and this car is yours.” There are conditions though. You CANNOT have this car until you can not only change a tyre, but also the wheels, and can jack the car up, WITHOUT anyone helping you to do so, as I am NOT having you on the roads until you can.."

So..I did. it took me almost 4 days to get the wheel off every time, and 3 attempts to pass my driving test - but there is never now any danger of me running into problems when driving.

I can still do the helpless female act if it’s required, but it’s just not me. I get on and I self-teach and I have fun doing so. I am though very girly in many respects. One of my cars is metallic pink, and my house is like an icecream palace, to be honest, but I really love gadgets and working out HOW things work for myself.

When my cable and broadband system shorted the entire house, I fixed the damn thing, and I was the one who worked out how I could get a wireless connection through to my bedroom. The boody Telewest guy didn’t have a clue!

THAT was a fun day. That engineer loathed me, and I even heard him telling his mate on the phone, “There is a right smartarsed woman here, who knows more than me, and she is pissing me off - big-time!”

That amused me so much, I was still laughing about it when I went out that night!

Anyway..will maybe go to the loft later and see which Amiga. We also have an old Commodore something-or-other up there too.

Must go. Staff lunch, and I promised NBully I would get some of Karl Grammer’s copulin facts and figures copied for him, so I better run!

Ail

I remember all the time i have spent on my Amstrad cpc 464…
The games were stored on merely audio cassette, with a long, long, long time to load… read error A … read error B … rewind and try to reload…
and also it’s monochrome green screen… damn, i have glasses now

The sport game that come along with the wii is just a kind of sample, but it’s true that nintendo has choosen to target a larger public with a nice price instead of put multicore processor and powerfull graphic chip like in the X360 and the PS3.
Too bad.

What, no one had a “trash 80”? And I knew I should have kept that NeXt cube they gave me.

Sure did. Had lots of computers from back then, including the Tandy ones. Back then, an MC10 and CoCo-2.

That reminds me, I should get the CoCo-3, so I can move up to OS-9 and multitask on sub megahertz machine.

For that day and age, that’s pretty incredible, if you think about it.

Ooh… come to think of it I DO have a Tandy Model II as well (I think) …

Will have to look.

And a Tandy 1400 “laptop.”

How does one get in on the M.I.T. swapfest? there’s nothing I’d like better that a custom built tesla coil or magnetic array … for “pennies on the dollar”

Cheers,

 Quicksilver
