Another female artist with Autism is Australian Lisa Simone, who was diagnosed in late 2007. After the diagnosis, Simone founded Art 4 Autism , a business which aims to raise Autism awareness, while providing a vehicle to showcase talents:
…recently i was lucky enough to be present at a talk at the northern Rivers Community gallery by Lismore resident and artist Lisa Simone or “Zaffy” as her cartoon character is known. The talk took place during a recent Art4Autism exhibition featuring local autistic artists.
Lisa’s fascinating story about her life before and after a late diagnosis of ‘high functioning on the autism spectrum’ gave me real insight into how autistic people view the world…
After 39 years of trying to ‘fix’ things about herself perceived as character flaws, her diagnosis came as an overwhelming relief. She then began developing a series of cartoons, drawing inspiration from the health, sensory, learning and social difficulties she experiences in day-
to-day life.
They show her literal mind and the way she thinks in pictures, her hyper-sensitivity to smells, lights and sounds and the difficulty she
has in conforming with other people’s emotional expectations…
Here are some videos on Lisa ‘Zaffy’ Simone, her interesting work, and how her mind works:
