To get into the ‘zone’ mentally to exploit pheromone hits ideally one should not rely on one crutch (whether it be a boost in confidence from the pheromones themselves, drugs, or supplements or anything else including Feldenkrais). Rather one should attempt to change their own baseline ‘mental situation’ over time and this would include learning from the experiences gained from pheromone use (as MHarris talks about in the posts below). RussianBEAR offers some great advice in the posts below about how to get to the root sources of your internal problems rather than relying on drugs or supplements or anything else. I believe a two-pronged approach where you use ‘external aids’ like Pheromones (and say if you need them, alcohol/medication/supplements) along with work on targeting your root problems (which may involve some of the things mentioned by RussianBEAR and professional therapy) is the ultimate solution to ensuring you are more in the ‘zone’ mentally not just to exploit pheromone hits but in life generally…

"…Your baseline can change over time, too.
A user may start off not very charismatic (using pheromones as a crutch), and get along better with more people with pheromones. Then eventually their behaviors change and they become more comfortable around people in general. Then they start should get better social flow even without pheromones. No longer will they need their “crutch”, although it may still be useful to get that extra 10%…"

A self dissolving crutch (or stitch) is the best kind.
Many people definitely increase in competence as they use pheromones, and that’s a good thing.
Like physical therapy, it can sort of be like “social therapy”. Relearning how to use “social muscles you haven’t used in years”, or have underused (and even the best and most skilled of us have “muscles” of all sorts which are underused).
Then those users may switch from using pheromones as crutches to using them as enhancement and playful experiments. They can also collect the self esteem bonus along the way for having themselves gained in competence.
And they are great for enhancement, great for those already quite competent. We’ve seen skilled salespeople their close rates with the right mixes…"

Whatever it is, when I put it on, I feel like the best I can be, which in a way is a bad thing, as I have become reliant on the pheromone. Not a physical, but a mental addiction. When I don’t have A314 on, I don’t quite feel like myself anymore. I should take some days off using it so I can work on my inner-self a bit more and improve the way I see myself.
I understand your concern.
It terms of behavioral psychology, it really doesn’t matter how you generate a behavior. Eventually, if you act a certain way long enough, you’ll grow the mental legs to support that behavior.
In a very real sense, “Fake it till ya make it” has been shown to work, for those who stick at it long-enough.

It’s a quick fix, that I know, but I’ll sort out myself in time, when I’m ready.
When you feel good, for whatever reason, throw yourself into as many social interactions as you can… and you will build the proper mental experience necessary for the “temporary” effect to extend itself.
Remember, even if you’re using it as a crutch… a crutch is there to help you walk. Soon enough, you’ll be able to walk without the crutch.
After you no longer need it, your relationship to the tool becomes enhancement & want based. You can use it for enhancement, if you like. You can use it because you want it, not because you need it.
Despite what the Buddhists say about “want”, to me, want is involved in true mental freedom. To me, need is the prison, while things that are optional are involved in freedom. And things you want are totally optional.

I Only Feel “Alive” When I’m Drunk - ImmInst Forums

"Topic: I Only Feel “Alive” When I’m Drunk, Not a helpful post, but a post asking for help.
Didn’t read the entire thread, but I’ve had my issues with drug/alcohol abuse in the past, and still do to a certain extent. (Hey I’m here and I like pharmaceuticals, you know…)
I think what you want to do is have a deep and honest look at yourself. Try to track what situations cause you negative emotions/feelings, and what the basis of that feeling really is. You can almost always trace it to some kind of an unfavorable situation in the past. Another thing, some of the post sounds like self-pity. That was really hard to me to deal with, as were my numerous fears which I’ve acquired due to not being raised in a functional household by both parents.
Society also creates these images and stereotypes which make you feel “unworthy”. You have to be aware of that, as a lot of negative self-invalidating feelings stem from all these social stereotypes, because you feel like you have to compete with others to be a functioning member. And you really don’t life is a journey and your own quest and yours only.
Taking drugs, alcohol etc. just masks the problem and allows you to validate the positive sides of your experience, but negative experiences IMO are CRUCIAL to growth. It’s an easy solution to just pop some pills which will make you happy NOW. Yeah let’s go to the doctor and get a load of happy pills prescribed so you don’t have to actually DEAL with the issues. Sounds like an easy way out to be honest. All depression is curable once you figure out the root cause of it. Cause in a sense it just an emotion, gotta figure out its cause. These pharm giants just love selling you antidepressants and tranquilizers, because you get hooked on them, and if you do em long enough you’ll have no chance of getting off (especially benzos, OMG stay away from those!)
It’s very difficult admitting certain stuff about yourself, because your self-esteem will create all kinds of justifications and denials, as well as distortions (well I’m not THAT BAD…some people are worse etc.)
I’m still a work in progress but I was in a similar boat. Yeah I still got my demons and my vices, but it’s constant improvement."

1)Exercise-if you are sedentary then 45 minutes brisk walk 3 times a week will have a marked effect. Daily exercise is better and a mix of aerobic, skilled and strength workouts even better.
2)Social-if you can mix your exercise with social stuff (team sport, classes etc) even better-but simply being social most days or more makes a difference. A huge difference as the brain evolved and was designed for precisely this.
3)Varied experiences and new skills. Seriously challenge yourself-physical, mental, creative. Daily! even half an hour a day study can turn you into a semi expert in a bunch of new fields. Gaining knowledge alone can build a stronger sense of self.
4)Healthy diet. There’s anyone on here that even needed that comment? Um probably not. It’s the obvious that gets forgotten.
5)Not essential but try this out for 20 days @ 20 mins a day.Brain Workshop - a Dual N-Back game - it’s free, plenty of material written and some research behind it-non biased. I used it and since last november completed Mark Bear’s Neuroscience - twice and a load of other neuro material. I’m into this as I’m about to get into an OU degree encompassing Neuroscience and hope to reach pHd level in time to come.
6)Teach yourself some cognitive behavioural therapy (For Dummies works fine) or REBT (very similar). Or try motivational interviewing. Learning a few basics of self counselling/coaching skills is now a common strategy employed by many of the best therapists-giving you the tools to work with yourself.
Thought I’d throw my two pence worth in. For me working on the brain is a multi self discipline approach. I find it hard to overcome certain things myself - I work from home and need to get out of my own comfort zone in order to earn more money in the future. Part of this is feeling “smart enough” to be any good at the things that would genuinely fire me up. The introspection offered by my use of piracetam has given me plenty of insights into “why” I am as I am–and also informs me that knowing why means shit. It doesn’t help you move forwards ."

“…Exactly. You have to strive for self-improvement with nootropics being “your little helper” as opposed to a “crutch”. If you’re interested in somethin, learn all about it and analyze and verbalize your mistakes. Make an effort to get off your butt and realize negative experiences are key to growth. It’s all easier said than done and it’s a daily challenge, but you can’t just hope to take some pills to replace an actual learning experience.”

This may sound harsh, but the conclusion I came to in life is this:
If you feel like you can’t perform a particular activity unless you’re “on someting” - then you probably got absolutely no business performing that activity in the first place
And this goes for everything."
My Epic Journey of Mental Illness - ImmInst Forums
russianBEAR (June 6, 2009):
"I know this will sound like blasphemy (sp.?) after all these posts about neurological disorders and various diagnoses, but I’ll say it anyways.
There’s not a single supplement, anti-depressant, anything else, that will help you solve internal problems. They can mask them temporarily and be a sort of an “assistant” in solving external problems (daily tasks etc.), especially when your body doesn’t have a tolerance to it. You just temporarily forget about everything and focus on the fact that you’re in sweet-bliss denial and enjoy those feelings.
But unless you do some “soul searching” and figure out what caused initial problems, every medication is bound to fail and will produce mostly side effects after some time.
You said you thought it’s “normal” to feel miserable and depressed and thought that you just “weren’t taking it” like everyone else was. That right there is a BIG sign of LOW internal value. By looking at “everybody else”, you’re automatically saying that you’re worse and just not as valuable as others. The fact that you never told anyone about this also indicates your lack of comfort with yourself. This stuff never went away when you took Paxil or whatever bullshit pill you were prescribed at the time. It was just stored away for later, so it could pop up with 6 times the strength as before, because it’s an issue you did not deal with.
Look, I was in the same boat. Moving to the United States at an early age of 12 (I’ve since moved back to Mother Russia) was a really traumatic experience. Getting picked on and beaten in school, being told to “go back to your communist country” and basically being made fun of repeatedly slaughtered by internal value big time.
So I turned to weed. Then I turned to harder drugs. Then I thought hey, if I just take some nootropics I’ll be able to do all the things I’ve had trouble with, like social interaction. And at first it was great. I was doing the same things when high - being in my own shell, and depsarately trying to please everyone, because god forbid someone tells me something negative or there’s an “awkward situtation”.
After a while I started making excuses and justifications. Looking up stuff like schitzophrenia (sp.?) and other mental diseases made it seem like I got it 100%. Hey it was CONVENIENT to think that so I didn’t have to work on my personality by just chalking it up to “illness”. It was also great so I could feel SORRY FOR MYSELF and just mentally mastrubate that thought repeatedly.
Then I started looking back into my life experiences and realized the root cause of the problem. My parents got divorced early, and I was raised by my mom and a very neurotic grandmother who’d sometimes beat me etc. My father wasn’t around that much, and he never really provided me with the “male discipline” part of life experience. He actually instilled alot of fears in me. I never received VALIDATION for things I did RIGHT - it was always “ooh you got a B+ on this really hard math test…how come you didn’t get an A!!!”
So what I did is I started trying to figure out where it all began - and by tracking my thoughts and emotions I realized that I needed to work on myself. And here’s the catch - PAIN and NEGATIVE STUFF are KEYS to GROWTH! People wanna avoid pain by popping a little pill, instead of taking it all in stride and learning from each experience. That’s weak shit right there son.
All these anti-depressants are bullshit drugs that ruin your brain. There are maybe 1% of people who legitimately need any medication that has to do with psychological disorders. Therapists also don’t help because they want you to keep yapping about your problems, make their $500 per hour and send you home. God forbid you solve your problems - they lose a CASH COW!!!
So, what I suggest you do is pay close attention to your subconscious and the kind of emotions certain thoughts trigger. Then try to realize wtf is causing this. Also look at your parents to see where you picked up certain traits. Then just ACCEPT all these thoughts, both negative and positive. Accept yourself how you are, but work on it.
Get disciplined, push yourself. You need to learn about how your mechanism of denial works (making excuses, justifications, and distortions "oh I’m only A LITTLE BIT late it’s OK, oh I’m only A LITTLE ANTI SOCIAL there are people who are worse = BULLSHIT).
Otherwise you’re gonna end up in a very bad place once you get older, trust me I was in the same boat and this has NOTHING to do with some bs DSM-IV manual that says you got this or that!"
