There are a very, very few people who can “give up” the pleasures of cigarette smoking, but most people can quit a habit they no longer enjoy or that is harmful and replace it with a new habit that is satisfying and healthy.
So.
Consider trying this approach. Find a time when you will have an uninterrupted half hour.
Lie down, and systematically, from fingers to body core, from toes to neck and face, tense your muscles, group by group, for a few seconds and then relax them. When you get to that whole-body-relaxed-state, just dwell there for a few minutes. You can think of anything or nothing, but stay awake.
Then, calmly think through this idea – you are talking to your unconscious mind: you have this clear sense that smoking cigarettes is a habit, one that you don’t enjoy so much, one that you’d like to replace with a habit that is healthier and more satisfying.
Then, ASK your unconscious mind to please consider allowing you to quit the cigarette habit, and to replace it with something healthier WHEN IT’S OKAY to do so.
Then, affirm that it is completely up to your unconscious mind to decide when and how. If it’s all right, would your unconscious mind please give you a clear signal of when it will be all right to smoke your last cigarette and celebrate starting a new habit?
You can repeat this relax-and-talk-to-UNC two or three times, separate days, a few days apart probably best. Don’t overdo, else it will perhaps begin to feel like “nagging.”
Then, forget you’ve done this exercise.
Wait for the cue from your unconscious mind as to when it is all right for you to have you last cigarette. You might wake up one morning and as you go to shower, it might just “pop into your head” that such and such a date will be your last day as a smoker.
Then you can proceed with confidence that you will, with minimum discomfort or withdrawal signs, be able to replace that habit with something much more enjoyable and healthy.
