While I was in LA this last week, I recently met with a tv producer friend of mine, and squirt him down with 3 sprays of MX297. It was the first time I’d seen it in action! Of COURSE I was going to take the opportunity to douse him in a molecule I have no experience with yet. In the name of SCIENCE!
Sorry if all the names and places have been anonymized. They’re working on a pilot that I’m supposed to know NOTHING about. Shh!!
Back to our regularly scheduled pheropost:
We were on the guestlist for one of the Sunset Strip clubs, since one of his prospective business contacts was performing that night. My Producer friend has been courting this particular talent to host a reality show with an off-the-wall concept, and we all met at a sushi bar about 15 minutes before the performer had to go back to the club for sound check.
So we all sat, lined up at the sake bar: me, my producer friend, and the talent. During the quick meeting, my producer friend had the talent’s rapt attention. Other people from his party started to melt away and go to their duties at the club, but the talent was fixated, nodding, usurped in conversation. He was eager to discuss the project, and trade all his contacts, and discuss the details. What was supposed to be a light meeting turned into a much deeper contact. The talent’s eyebrows and face were intense and enthusiastic, and every part of his body was engaged/leaning in. He didn’t talk to or engage me at all; He just didn’t need to. They were intent on their discussion. . It was interesting to watch their little conversation bubble. They both spoke really loud and official to each other, and used a lot of industry terms in front of me, but it wasn’t strained. It was all biz. And it was cool. It had a real cool, relaxed, all biz flow.
Hmm… Well, then the talent checked his watch and had to go. (5 minutes late, and still conversing while walking out the door). My producer friend said it was a really great contact.
Since we didn’t feel like catching the opening act, we hung out in the sushi bar for a little while, just being mellow.
Here’s where I noticed that I had a sort of dehydrated/drunk body feel. I was just “rolling” with the beat of the music, and the cadence of the people around me. My contacts were a bit dry. I wasn’t parched, but it reminded me of having a drink or two. Every few moments, my friend and I would say, “I love this song!”. Talk. Talk. Talk. “I love this song!” Talk. Talk.
Real nice, smooth, hangout. In sync with the person next to you.
All of a sudden, we got a grip of the time and headed a few doors down to the venue. We got our vip wrist stamp and trundled in. Couldn’t have been a smoother ride. The producer didn’t even need to say his name - it seemed the doorman knew already that he was a vip and went through all the appropriate motions.
I hung back a bit. My producer friend was very socially aggressive. He excused himself from me frequently, and did his rounds. Great to watch him work the room.
He convened with me later, telling me how simple the mix made his job. As though he was not aware of “patience”: there was a time when he wanted to interact with another talent, perhaps for another project, and even though the talent had a crowd around him, my producer friend found no reason to blast through them and introduce himself. He said it felt like everyone was in the zone, socially. And everyone just ASSUMED his authority/dominance – and not in a “ooooh, scary” way. More in a “Oh. I notice that this is the man we are to respect. Cool. We are in the presence of him!”
Weird effect. Neat!
OH.
Also – the weirdest effect of the night:
I had to scramble out of the venue and go a few blocks away to the coffee shop at Hustler, because, seriously, bass in your womb makes you feel WEIRD.
When my producer friend met back up with me, we browsed the shop a bit, and as we left, he got caught in some friendly exit smalltalk with the staff.
The checkout clerk then proceeded to ask his permission to speak to me.
