The guy may well have been reacting to the 'none. Not necesarily uncommon.
The girls may have been also. You said they were young - a certain amount of standoffishness in the face of 'none is not uncommon with young women who are just figuring themselves out - especially in the romance/sexual realm. They instinctively understand what the 'none means and may feel themselves reacting to it - but they are not necessarily comfortable with the 'none message or their own reactions - so they are interested but cautious.
