Ridley and Miller propose a striking suggestion- That human consciousness, art, science, and basically all creativity are the result of sexual rather than environmental pressure. Stated another way, Survival of the fittest is bullshit - what counts is sexiness. The human mind is thus the product of sexual rather than natural selection, due to an accidental preference of ancient females for clever males. If this is true, the implications are staggering. Rolexes denote “fitness” with regard to environmental pressure. The wearer has achieved a certain rank or status, in his environment (modern culture) and the timepiece reflect this.
Problem is, it can be easily faked.
Those can actually easily be faked, i see it all the time. guys will just repeat something funny/witty/smart/etc. they heard from someone else or read from somewhere (this annoys me quite a bit). or they know what to say to a lady to get her in bed quick. . then he’ll dump her when he’s busted his nut.
in reality, the only thing that has evolved is our environment.
A good book about the effects of sexual selection on human development is “The Mating Mind”.
In my experience, everything can be faked only to a point. You can learn a few funny/smart/empathic/sexy lines and take those to the club and have success with it, but unless you have real qualities to back it up, people will tire of you quickly. It takes real skill to make real friends.
If superficial charm was all we needed in life on an evolutionary level, we would not have developed the deeper qualities. Besides that, it takes some real qualities to be able to develop charm in the first place. If you lack self control, you won’t stop talking long enough to make another person feel heard. If you are lazy, you won’t smell good or look good.
