FOR the female half of the population, it may bring a satisfied smile. Scientists have found that evolution is driving women to become ever more beautiful, while men remain as aesthetically unappealing as their caveman ancestors.
The researchers have found beautiful women have more children than their plainer counterparts and that a higher proportion of those children are female. Those daughters, once adult, also tend to be attractive and so repeat the pattern.
I don’t know about anyone else, but that information does not bring on “a satisfied smile.”
More attractive competition, less attractive available guys? Stupid evolution. Like I need any more obstacles.
I would rather excite the mind of a female lover and get her to that lust plateau than have her want be because I have a tight ass…
I have an ass, that fits in my Wrangler cowboy cut jeans… and I love my Steel toe Wolverine boots, and my stetson hats, and I love to two step…
I love to cook, I love to read, I make books in the 16th-18th century style binding, I am a renaissance man, I am an old soul…
But for me attraction is in the eyes, soul gazing… I can see through you to what you are… That is attraction… to know deep down… this girl really gets me… and if I was to truly let her in… I might… just perhaps have a chance at happiness…
That is what I look for in my attraction…
I want someone who has something to offer, looks fade… but your eyes… they stay the same…
I never thought many of the girls I knew in my school and university days were that overly attractive, just a select few. Nowadays when I look at young women of school or university age it’s just a select few in my book that are totally unattractive, most appear “appealing” to me.
Or maybe it’s just the dirty older man thing in me coming out. But apparently evolutionary science now backs this up. However i’ve always believed that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
This is a very dangerous assumption to make, as we can’t compare different genrations as there have been differences in attitudes and behaviours of people as cultural beliefs and political and social norms are ever changing. In other words, this can never be an accurate study.
However I will say the access to cosmetic surgery is in this genearation more abundant than it’s ever been.
That’s it! No really, maybe men that have matured a little look at other people with different eyes than in their youth?
I’ve not seen too much good come out of cosmetic surgery - it’s easily overdone and then tends to look very artificial to me. And that’s far from attractive for me…
Careful what you wish for. If you girls “Darwinate” us out then who will you scream at, bitch at, yell at, ask for money, throw things at, cry about, complain to AND about, love, hate, ect. We men do have a purpose. Get rid of us n’ you’ll get real bored real quick.
Well, according to this study, women are much too kind and accepting of men. So, be grateful for getting those things, because it will get really bad, if they decide they need men around.
I read this article top to bottom, including the comments, and nowhere did I find any mention of kindness or acceptance in a relationship.
Except in your reply.
Most women have decided that they do need or at least want a stable relationship with a man. And they know it. One of the primary reasons for that need is to have a counterpoint, a counterbalance of emotional stability so that they can fully exercise the range and depth of emotions that women find so deeply satisfying and entertaining.
As men, we have learned to accept that women experience emotions that may not be appropriate or helpful in some situations. (Note that this does not excuse destructive, excessively counterproductive emotions or emotions completely unrelated to the situation at hand.) Still as men in love and inevitably wanting to satisfy our women’s needs, we treat our women with tolerance and kindness.
And they in return would be … “too kind and accepting of men”???
Dominick, I’ve recently been disappointed. I really expected a higher level of understanding, and more importantly, empathy and tolerance.
I wish be be respectful of your views, however I am finding it hard as such when we are discussing a “scientific paper” that was published in a “scientific journal”.
This is a place for expressing observation to the pro or con, however not the place for opinion.
I must ask, are you even experienced in such matters as to be commenting? Have you traveled the country, dated women from multiple genetic backgrounds?
I have dated women from around the world, and I can say this… American women are lacking in parts of the USA.
Okay, I can buy that as possible. For the moment we’ll skip over how they accounted for cultural influence on beauty (improvements in diet, healthcare, dental work, hair styling, makeup, attitude, etc), or how they quantified attractiveness, or how they accounted for cultural variation in attractiveness.
This is not so clear to me. No genetic mechanism has been suggested as to how this happens. It is not clear at all how heritable attractiveness could change in only females but not males. Our ability to be sexually dimorphic is highly constrained. For example, males have nipples, not because they are functional but because it would be genetically complicated to get rid of the male nipple altogether. Large breasts on a man would waste caloric energy, but the nipple doesn’t cost anything or get in the way.
Along the same lines, if attractiveness disproportionately aided female reproductive success, it seems like male attractiveness would also increase simply because it would be a mostly neutral trait for males. Like the male nipple, it wouldn’t cost anything.
From what I have read, a large component of “attractiveness” has to do with facial and body symmetry. To the degree that this is genetic, how would its expression be gender specific?
On the other hand, female attractiveness is in part due to maintenance of childlike bone structure and facial features into adulthood. This could be expressed in a gender specific way (it already is).
Another unexplained aspect of this study that you can read if you pull the original research article, is that supposedly, there was a study in which attractive couples had 20% more daughters than unattractive couples. I can’t think of a biological mechanism for that to happen either.
I too have dated from all over the world. I’ve been to more countries than most people my age have been alive. I spent 3 months in Europe, and hung out w/ a lot of beautiful women. “Some” American women are very lacking in attitude. I agree that is regional. The south used to not be that bad but is getting that way over the last few years. It’s more apparent in college aged girls around here. The act like their sh*t don’t stink. I ask what they’re studying, which is usually something totally useless, like arts, pysch, french literature, ect. I laugh and ask what they will do to earn money? Unfortunately most are very beautiful and will be a trophy wife.
Relatively few people work in a field that has much to do with what they have studied. At the company that I’m currently working for (as consultant) there’s far more women who studied history of arts or psychology than ones who studied anything economy-related.
And I’ve read about a study lately about job offers - the most offers wanted people with a university degree - without specifying in which field. So I’m pretty sure these girls will do fine with whatever they study.
And besides, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with people studying something like arts or literature - the world would be a rather sad place when it would only be inhabited by rational economists…
