Alpha is a social rank, how one achieves it may vary but for the most part it’s a job title given to what is often described as a servant king. Yes the alpha of a wolf pack is usually the strongest and most assertive, and yes he gains the benefit of the first portion of the kill as well as mating rights but he has been shown in many case studies to be playful and nurturing to his packmates, who likewise benefit from his leadership as it’s his job to make sure that bellies get filled and territory is protected.
You may not see quarterbacks smiling and joking during a game…but they’re in the middle of business at that moment. Look at interviews and footage of quarterbacks when the game is over or during the off season. These are not intimidating men, the strongest most physical QB is a pipsqueak compared to his offensive line. If he wants those guys to deliver and keep him untouched long enough for him to make a pass he has to inspire and motivate them, fear won’t work. I guarantee you that when the game is over he’s out buying his men a beer and cracking jokes right along side of them.
Why wouldn’t somebody like Tom Brady smile? the guy is married to Gisele of all people, he has multiple championships under his belt that his men helped him get and forget about Gisele…have you seen his baby’s momma? He smiles a lot in fact and I would to if I had his life…why? cause it’s good to be the king.
As for Mob bosses…the drawback to leading by fear and intimidation is that eventually somebody that wants what you have and feels slighted by the lack of respect you show him will try to kill you in order to steal your position. And he’ll do it by forging alliances with others that fear you and have more to gain by following him.
This is shown in Chimp colonies. A prospective alpha will first befriend the females, doing little favors, helping take care of young etc. Once enough females like him, he then courts the males. It seems that the females have an unspoken agreement that they will only mate with either him or the males that support him. Then he makes his move. The reigning alpha may be bigger and stronger but it’s a social position like being a captain of a team as opposed to an individual title like being a champion fighter…the alpha to be has to make other people like him and believe that following his lead will make their lives better…in modern society we call this democracy and it included smiling, waving, shaking hands and kissing babies.
For a more scientific argument, studies have shown that in social mammals where the alpha male position is most relevant for studies of human interactions, that in addition to an above average testosterone level, alpha’s also possess higher than normal levels of the neurotransmitter, serotonin.
Serotonin has been shown to have anti stress and anti depressive effects, which is essential when one is responsible for the well being of the social group. Being a leader is stressful and alpha’s should be calm, cool and collected…and maintaining a good humor is essential for this. It has also been shown to have bonding and nurturing effects similar to Oxytocin, again essential since your position depends on you delivering on the promise of your leadership benefiting the group, something you would be hard pressed to do if you don’t actually care about your group.
As for varying definitions, no…I don’t buy into that. Alpha Male thanks to the pickup community and other mediums has become a catch phrase of sorts. Some feminists may use it in a negative context but for the most part it’s a social position to be aspired to. Varying the definition allows those that are not true alpha’s to stroke their own ego by turning weaknesses and flaws they should be working to overcome into qualities they tout as reasons they’re alpha males…when it just isn’t the case.
A guy that’s grim and stoic won’t be social enough to inspire anyone to follow his lead and while he might bully his way into power at some point, a legitimate alpha with charisma and the best interest of his social group at heart will unseat him in short order. So don’t buy into Hollywood cliche’s of the strong silent type as being alpha, nor the imposing and aggressive bully that can’t control his own rage. A short temper or lack of social skills are not alpha qualities, and saying that they are is usually self deception.
