Consciously perceived odors

What can an orbitofrontal cortex-endowed animal do with smells?
Ann N Y Acad Sci. 2007 Dec;1121:102-20.

“The results presented here indicate that the OFC (as a distinctively mammalian brain region) is a critical neurobiological interface that flexibly links affect and action, providing advantages for adaptation and survival that exceed the everyday reach of our OFC-impoverished vertebrate (piscine, amphibian, reptilian, avian) kin.”

This entire issue is on the sense of smell. The article linked above, with the final sentence quoted can be taken in the context of conscious perception and extended well to what we know about the unconscious affects of pheromones on behavior.
