Do pheromone products really work, or is it just the wearer? A skeptic asks

This doesn’t answer your question in any sense, but I’m attempting to put out there why I think it isn’t as simple to assume it won’t work for me. There’s limited availability of scientific research. The problem here, I suspect, is similar to that in many fields skirting the edges of science. As I posted in my post in the new user forum, I don’t know either and hence I’m going to try. The overwhelming anecdotal evidence is interesting. There’s also conflicting studies, there’s studies suggesting the olfactory organ that responds to pheromones is not active in humans, but later studies show specific FMRI blood flow changes in the brain when exposed to various pheromonic chems. The problem I mentioned earlier is that it falls under the skeptical science purview, so research into it using humans is somewhat of a cloudy area. Publishing a paper that makes claims to it working even if the research is simply generalized, comes with the risk of being labeled within the community, not a direct response necessarily, may not even happen, but the concern for that risk limits research in many areas like this.

Now I’m not suggesting this is the same as someone publishing a paper on some pseudo-science like Plasma cosmology and such, which is pretty much BS time and time again shown. Rather this has so much conflicting data, aside from the general professional aversion to large scale research into it, without some set in stone publications to build on, grant funding is also likely difficult.

There’s a good few papers in the publications, Psychoneuroendocrinology and Hormones and Behavior, that have interesting results from fMRI studies showing changes in the brain resulting from a number of different chemicals, as well as subjective response differences to those exposed and those not in double blinds over placebo.

Lastly a big problem is the subjective nature of it, which many fields suffer from, psychology being a huge one in and of itself, and this being a largely subfield within psychology and behavioral sciences.

So take from that what you will, I am not saying yes or no, I’ve ordered some for the purpose of seeing myself. Unfortunately, that to will be anecdotal and not offer much “proof” beyond what that is worth.

My suggestion is to just try, it’ll work or it won’t. I’m not going in with the mindset that it will work, nor that it won’t. I simply do not know. So that’s my view as someone who is walking in the door with not much more than you have on the subject.

Have you had a look in the Studies and Abstracts Forum?

Quite a lot of the basic science is linked-up there and whilst there could always be more, there is a fairly good head of work already.

And if you have further doubts, AD’s warranty on consumer products is amongst the best of any phero seller - So stick to the proven/consumer-line products and you will not lose-out at all if they don’t work for you.

In my newbie opinion, pheros act like a tool on you and all others around you. You can have great result or none but in most cases for me .. they work.

Regards

Instant Gentleman worked wonderfully for me. I don’t know about the others but the self effects are there. I suffer from social anxiety and I find I am more relaxed when I’m wearing this. I don’t know if this effect would last or diminish over time but so far I am happy with that so I’d like to vote Yes if I could but because it is my first product and I cannot completely rule out placebo effect, I opted to vote No idea, and I’m just experimenting.

Basileus: Are the effects consistant most of the times you use the product? Do you feel that the self-effects, placebo or not, have improved significantly your resistance towards social anxiety? Do you feel it makes a difference, overall, in your everyday life? What happens if you go a day, or several days, without IG? Does your social angst come back? Are you more stressed up? What dosage have you been using? Have you tried raising or lowering the dose to see if the effects are more acute or subtle? What application points have you been using (targeting self and/or others)? These are the questions you need to ask yourself, and hopefully, report on. These observations might help rule out the placebo effect. And if a placebo was to improve the way you take on the world each day, wouldn’t it be a great thing to have around ?

I have to admit, A314 does a wonderful job for me regarding getting myself in line (I struggle with autism). And it might not be noticable at first, but I still remember Dee saying that during the drought I became more “emotional” and “less comprehensible”. Drought is over, and behold: I am getting into my old mood of “get the f*cking shit done” again :stuck_out_tongue: And not just here, my girlfriend also notices that mood.

So I would agree with Conjurator here, if you want to rule out the social issue, just try a lower/higher dosage for a week and compare its effects with the week before. If its placebo, then you would not feel any different from before. If its not placebo, then you will either feel the ‘king of the world’ or just ‘meeh’. Using IG I had the problem of being “too social”…

Thanks for the advice, I was going to buy a to-go sample first.

Tomorrow Is my first official day wearing mones. Prob will never go back to not wearing anything. If I notice a difference. I will post about. Check my journal entry. My sister got to my package before I got home and she opened it. I’m like where is my stuff? She is like what did you order it looks like battery acid… First day continues tomorrow

I think tuth works for me. Let’s just say I had success more times with tuth then without it.

I would be very interested to hear from the 32 users who reported NO in the poll. I want to hear what type of pheromones and environments they were using them.

At first I thought they did not work either and took me a few weeks to see results.
