Finally someone has it right.

I don’t know enough about the situation in NYC to form an opinion. I know when I left the area the taxes were out of control, many stores were shuttered, insurance was unobtainable. I agree with his assessment of politics though in general.

Good idea but it will probably never happen.

overhaul of regulations? Isn’t this the guy who regulated salt and trans fat in restaurant meals?

Yes.

Also no smoking in the bars.

But he’s also a self made billionare who’s got enough sense to actually do things right.

NYC is a lot better off with him in charge and the city’s done a lot better in that regard.

Not smoking in bars seems like a no-brainer to me.

I’m really not keen on politicians micro-managing peoples lives. Just making alot of money to me isn’t an indication of a good leader. I really don’t know much about New York though.

I’ve lived here all my life and I can tell you that conditions improved and the changes he’s made, as annoying as some can be, have benefited everyone. Watching partisan bickering really is F*ing up the country and it’s nice to have someone with the least agenda for it.

Too bad the rest of the country won’t vote for him.

People seem to be leaving though.

That’s exactly why the basketball player (I think it was Lebron?) wouldn’t go to NY. They offered him much more money, but after the ridiculous taxes and the high cost of living he would have been making 1/3.

That’s why the NY Jets and NY Giants, both play in NJ too, which is not much better.

It’s not just the taxes, it is super expensive to live here.

Unfortunately, if you want certain benefits and standard of living, with reduction of crime and good overall public services, you do have to pay the taxes. Also Florida and New Jersey (yuck) have cheaper homes and there are bigger properties and its quieter. Many people in NY also move out to Long Island, where they pay the highest taxes anywhere in the country.

It’s probably not mentioned in that article but besides the migration, it’s happened for years, people make money, and want to live in bigger houses and more suburban areas like Westchester County and Suffolk County.

Heck, once I start making more steady money I probably would move out there, yea you pay more but you get more peace and quiet out there. It’s just a cycle on what’s here.

I thought Rudy did the most to reduce crime. Like I said, I really don’t much about New York so I don’t know, that is just an impression I had.

A lot of people have that impression. It’s also why I don’t believe everything I read. I just know a bit more about it cause I live here.

Rudy did a lot for crime in NYC, but that was also with a better budget. Bloomberg is doing it with a reduced budget and not a lot of cops on the street.

Unfortunately, outside the city there is this impression of NYC that isn’t as accurate as it should be, but what can you do, I’m sure if I read up on something about where anyone else lives, it won’t be the same either.

Rudy did a lot more to halt crime, only because Dinkins was horrible on crime so there was more of it.

Yeah dinkins was an idiot. I remember growing up you would not venture in times square at night. Now it’s they cleaned up so much that it’s a norm to see tourists there late at night.

Dinkins was a flat out moron. Well, as an upstater, we’re feeling it here too. The whole western NY economy has been in a recession for years or at least it’s felt like one. Loads of businesses have left the area or have downsized. To add insult to injury, it feels like the state taxes are meant more for NYC than the rest of NY which doesn’t have the economic power of NYC.

Out of interest, what’s Bloomberg’s policies on crime?

A lot of it, from my knowledge, is through the police commissioner, I believe he makes the policy decisions.

Bloomy wanted to crack down on the smoking in bars, and other life style violations, but I know that what they use COMPSTAT is something that each precinct is responsible for lowering their overall crime statistics based on their specific area.

Each division has their own policies because not all areas in NYC are uniform in terms of types of crimes.

This is just what I’ve read over the years.
