I have posted this on another forum but i would be interested to hear what other people have to say
How does the line of work your in help you in real life, in your relationships with others or in your free time? What have you experienced in your job or career that you have found invaluable for life outside of work?
For me, being in sales is probably one of the best things I have done as it has helped me -
Continually build my confidence and change my personality drastically from being a bit of a shy introvert to a very confident and capable individual.
Improved my relationships with not only my family members but all my friends too
Has helped me learn how to deal with uncomfortable situations
has allowed me to meet a lot of successful people and learn from them
I’ve also worked in sales for a while…and the job I have now has a lot of sales aspects to it. I was kind of a natural at it, however there was still a rather steep learning curve, that once I got over, allowed me to grow in a lot of ways that benefitted me both in and out of the workplace. On top of the people skills it has helped me developed, I learned to overcome the fear of rejection…and how to take rejection stride and move on without letting it affect your mood. Because lord knows a bad mood and mindset spells disaster. I’ve learned not to take things personally, because it usually isn’t personal to them.
Working in sales teaches you how to read and ‘work’ different kinds of people, as you’re continually exposed to all sorts of personalities…each very different in what they find favorable. You’d be suprised about how much you can know about a person simply by the way they walk, or how they answer the phone.
Its funny in how a lot of the material you read in the PU community is so closely related to the skills you develop working in sales.
In the money management business one often has to make bets that will do well only if the conventional wisdom - including that of most well-regarded experts - turns out to be wrong. So developing confidence in that judgement means you will tend to discover and explore emerging technologies and social trends well before they hit the mainstream.
My line of work as an escort makes me find the sexual connection with anyone, regardless of their appearance and age. I just accept them as who they are, and allow a health energy exchange. Everyone needs to be loved, and physical contact is very good therapy.
My work as a firefighter/EMT means that I see a lot of different people, and some people live very differently from what I am used to. It has taught me that all human beings have intrinsic worth and dignity, and that I am responsible for being my patient’s advocate, even if I don’t agree with their lifestyle or choices they’ve made. I still have to provide patient care and behave in a professional manner.
As a US Postal Letter Carrier I had one route that took me from the poorest (and dangereous) section of town to an “upper class” section of town every day. What a contrast. See a lot, learn a lot.
SO! It is you who has been delaying all the packages by USPS! haha j/k or am I! BUM BUM BUMMMMMMM!
So yeah, I worked in sales for a while learned how to upsale etc. but i never really lacke din the confidence of talkign to people. So it didnt really help me out it just seemed to work for me because that the kind of person i am… Now i work in bussing and i dont like it at all.. I miss the customer interaction. So now i need a new job where i get to interact with people. I’m not a guy who just sits back and say hell no i dont want to talk to a customer they piss me off… im the guy who says “What a pisse doff customer? ill take care of it”… So i have learned i need people to be happy… Did i answer this prompt correctly?
I no longer work for the USPS. I also learned to have full sympathy with those who “go postal.” The sheer idoiocy of the place can drive anyone mad.
Otherwise I might indeed be the one “sampling” all those Androtics shipments…
After all we DID have to “inspect” things like Easyrider (especially the “show us your tits page”) and Playboy magazine each month you know. Tough job but someone had to do it.
