Lol, actually last year, about 10-11 months ago, tore my meniscus playing basketball, hasn’t healed on its own and doctor said it would in 6-7 months with proper rest. Because of college, couldn’t give proper rest, gotten worse and now feels like some kind of therapy is in need!
P.S. I guess if I could trade the basketball injury as cause to a night of intense sex like that causing it, daaaam, some night that would be
I’ve heard anecdotal evidence of prolotherapy working, but there have not been enough studies done to indicate its effectiveness.
If you don’t want to go down the surgery route, take your scans to a physio and ask them to provide you with a programme of knee stability exercises.
I (and many athlete friends) have had great success with HGH or the growth factor peptides like IGF-1 and GHRP-6 for cartilage tears and joint or tendon issues, but I used them after surgery on my knee.
I’m a PTA actually and i see trillions of MMT’s. unfortunately prolotherapy and prp only apply to tendons and ligaments i believe. PRP is a technique that uses treated blood plasma to accelerate healing but the inner 2/3 of the meniscus is avascular anyway so unlike with bones and muscles(tendons), all the plasma in the world wont help. although, i have heard of a technique that introduces blood to the otherwise avascular cartilage of the meniscus to promote healing but it’s not practiced widely and you would probably have to travel out of state to have it performed. do a google search for " meniscus tear vascular access channel" best of luck and get back to me w/ any questions
I’m sure you have more knowledge on this than me, but some studies/experiences I’ve been reading point that it’s possible, but I don’t know if this was accurate as to in what area but I’m guessing if it was in the red area, it would have healed on its own where the blood supply flows and therefore the tear that couldn’t heal must have been in the white area (little or no blood flow) and that’s when they decided to get prp or prolotherapy.
Just for reference in case if you have time on your hands (also for me for future ref) some sites that give their experience. The first 2 is a specialist and second is an experience by someone.
I had mine out in Feb 08 . I popped my knee cap out of place and I Thought it was the
ligaments till I had a MRI. I went to PT but it made it worse and finally just got it out. It was quite a relief really.
It was easy really. Took a couple hours and I walked right out of the procedure. Was sore for a few days and complained to Steve alot on the phone but was back to work in a week or so. I could have gone back in under a week but I milked it for some extra time LOL
That’s great! Removing your meniscus completely and no pain at all afterwards? that is striking… How long has it been since you got the surgery if I may ask? a year?
I didnt say no pain at all. It was sore and a little stiff the next day but it hurt less then before I had it out. You wont be able to tap dance or anything for a few weeks but you can walk and stand on it, the only long term problem I noticed was kneeling (behave) LOL I couldnt put pressure on it for almost 6 months although now I can but other then that I dont even notice it now. Feels just the same as my other knee.
Its been two years 2 months since I had it done and I can run jump squat and still do yoga without a problem.
Sounds legit. Bending knees past 90 degrees is already a problem, I have to do it slowly if I want to be able to do it and I’m sure that worsens the tear Hopefully I am able to get some kind of treatment within summer, this surgery scares me still I want to be able to play again at a high level
interesting links, seeking.
admittedly i don’t know much about prolotherapy but i would like to learn more. it doesn’t seem pseudoscience based like a lot of other therapy treatments out there. i once worked for a PT who thought modalities could treat anything. (he was trained in india) if someone had a meniscus tear, the protocol according to him was heat, e-stim, and ultrasound in addition to basic exercise. did this EVER help? …emphatically “NO.” i could get on an iconoclastic soapbox deriding my own profession, but as tisha found out, outpatient physical therapy can sometimes leave you worse off than when you started. proof that not all offices are created equal. like mechanics, there are good PT’s and BAD PT’s. this is also why i decided to work with the geriatric population. as for bucket handle tears, i’ve seen a few an honestly think that some sort of surgical intervention is needed at least to “re-allign” it first.
“Why choose Prolotherapy over arthroscopy? There is an innate feeling in most people that taking tissue out of the body in the long run is going to have a detrimental effect. Guess what happens when you have a meniscectomy? Yes, most likely you are going to accelerate the arthritic process dramatically in your knees.”
-i completely agree
Yeah I’ve been doing lots of research on Prolotherapy and especially on people’s self-experience and it seems to have had very good effects and results. Very rarely (only once) I read about a patient that had prolotherapy (in the back) and had bad effects from it, severe pain in the long-run and not just for a few days. I read more on it and patient mentioned that someone did it wrong and the assistant or whoever was inexperienced. Honestly, I haven’t seen any bad side-effects but then again it is not a scientifically proven method. I ended up somehow discovering PRP through researching about Prolo and it sounds even more promising. Together, it’s more efficient, as the doctor in one of the links I provided uses them. (If I were to go on with this method I would want to go to this doctor, as he has had much experience and knows how to work with Prolo)
Yep, it does accelerate the arthritic process dramatically and that is ONE of the reasons why I was looking into this. I feel with surgery I am more prone to re-injuring where if I do Prolo or PRP or both, the cartilage (or other tendons/tissues) tend to heal thicker, more dense, and stronger than what it was originally before the injury
Now this is all ideal. I still need to get another MRI done to see how much bigger the tear has concurred as my tear occurred close to a year ago and the first MRI was taken about 8-9 months ago. I really want to look forward in these processes.
What you mentioned, meniscus tear vascular access channel, that seems like a much modern type of method to repair meniscus degeneration or tears, and I would like to ask you if you’ve had any experience with this type of treatment? I was reading a few case-studies and they were on rabbits and dogs, and I think I ran into one on humans but I had to close it It seemed like it can be efficient.
unfortunately i have no experience with this procedure. i’ve only read abstracts on it. so much PT based treatment for MMT’s are intended to suppliment surgery. and beneficial outcomes from the pair usually comes from the surgery and not the PT and depending on the procedure, MMT surgery seems way too archaic to me. just like spinal fusion for diskogenic problems, but thats another topic…
do more research and make some phone calls my friend. do you have insurance?
Hey I signed up here just to post on this thread. I have worked with multiple athletes, and done so to myself and have successfully aided and seen meniscus tears heal fully. Prolotherapy does not apply just to tendons and ligaments, in fact if done on the knee via inter-articular injection is very successful with the meniscus. I recommend using Bacteriostatic sodium chloride solution with lidocaine, IGF-1 or IGF-1 Lr3 at 5-15 mcgs per injection. Also HGH can be used at 1 IU per injection but IGF is both cheaper and more successful.Run this protocol for every 3 days for 2 weeks at a time, do not run more than 4 2 week stints in a year to avoid possible but rare overgrowth at the site. This method is tried and proven amongst the bodybuilder and athlete community, but not widely accepted by the medical. Prolotherapy is not 1-100th as successful without the IGF-1 or HGH which is where the medical community falls short, give it a shot I guarantee you will be pleased with your results. Good Luck buddy.
