Lose weight, or gain muscle.. Skinny Rockstar or Big Bodybuilder etc

Please tell me mercury is in retrograde.

I did not tell him to cut gluten. I did not tell him not to eat carbs or even go low carb. I said cut wheat products. I did not tell him to give up wheat forever (I said try it for a month)

Carbs are in many other foods besides wheat. Veggies, rice, potatoes, oats (which are grains but not categorized as wheat)

You read an awful lot into what I did say that just wasn’t there in my original post.

I do not feel you are attacking me. I do think… no let me correct that I know that you feel I am somehow attacking your beliefs so your reading things into what I wrote in that original post that just are not there. Much of what your defending has absolutely nothing to do with what I said in my post. Makes me wonder who exactly are you defending yourself from. I am sorry you don’t like the way I covey information however I am not going to be told how I should speak and what I should say on any subject. Your welcome to disagree and offer him your own tips and Dsouza is bright enough to look into the tips given and decide for himself.

 Snort, sweety your preaching to the choir. Balance and moderation will probably be written on my headstone. I said give up wheat for a month not the rest of his life. While I am a low carb (not no carb) advocate and have a open mind to other information and methods I am not suggesting carbs are evil. We just eat way to much of them but again my post had nothing to do with carbs. I don’t think I even said the word in my original post. I will mention Sugar is the devil though LOL

I also didn’t say wheat was never eaten before the 40’s. I said it was not consumed in the sheer volume it is since it was commercialized in the 40’s.

While most of what you have stated and what I have stated are in agreement or at least along the same beliefs the only problem I see is you don’t like the way I said it. Again sorry but what you see is what you get and I cant see that changing any time soon. Your assumptions on what I meant and what people will assume I meant are not of my control. I am not going to refrain from speaking or change the way I speak out of fear that people will make those assumptions.

do agree with MusikAddikt, dsouza’s problem is much more complicated than just cut out wheat, he’s also having sex drive issues. Very low carb or wheat free diets work best on people that don’t lift weights, as they don’t need glycogen for energy. For optimum hormone levels while weight training you need atleast a 1:1 ratio of protein/carbs, or 1:2 ratio to build muscle + 20-30% healthy fats of total kcalories (there are scientific studies on this).

In order for him to lose fat while weight training, he needs to find out what his maintenance kcalories are per day (kcalories needed to stay at the same weight). When you know this just subtract 500-600kcalories from that number and your body will start burning fat. Keep carbs <40% and fats 20-25% Add in some low/medium intensity cardio if you feel like it 20-30mins after training and/or 20-30mins after you wake up with 5g+ BCAA’s.

If you want your abs to show you need a higher testosterone to estrogen ratio, eating super clean while avoiding processed foods/soda/alcohol/beer will keep estrogen down. the 1:1 ratio of protein/carbs will keep testosterone up. If you do cardio on an empty stomach in the morning, I’d recommend this supplement stack before cardio:

500mg Green Tea Extract (atleast 50-90% Polyphenols) (anti-oxidant/thermogenic)
10-15mg Yohimbine HCL (sex drive, libido, erections, increases blood flow in abdominal area)
200mg Caffeine (energy)

Although low carb or wheat free diets work, it won’t work in dsouza’s situation.

I agree with both of you but the man asked for tips. Wheat was just one tip and I cant figure out where I indicated that cutting out wheat would solve all his problems and create world peace LOL. Just like your suggesting green tea or Bri suggested omitting corn syrup. Its just a tip he can use along with what he is doing already and the other suggestion to reach his goal. Good lord who knew people would get so bent out of shape about wheat LOL

Tisha

That’s cool, no worries, thanks for your tip.

Tisha, i am not reading in to anything. Everything I have said has been aimed at defending a tried and true method for weight loss since your first post about calories in vs calories out being proven to be inaccurate and incomplete. What message did you intend to convey by posting that other than trying to stear people away from being able to believe in this method?

About the whole gluten and wheat thing… The wheat diets spawned off of low carb / gluten free diets and are basically the same thing when you get down to it. It’s all symantics.

Well, I am 25 days into my wheat free diet. I had two minor slip-ups. Last week I ate some pizza, but it had a cracker crust. The week before I had a casserole with some bread crumbs on it, but very thin layer. Other than that, no wheat whatsoever. Well, two weekends ago I spent the weekend out of town with some friends and drank a number of beers. Oh well, nobody is perfect!

I dropped an additional 7 pounds during since starting, and definitely feel less bloat. Clothes are really starting to get baggy now.

I went to the doc last week for a checkup and blood work. Everything came back stellar. High cholesterol runs in the family and last year it was 240, it is now 225, so it is trending down. Blood pressure was 172-120ish just 3 months ago, and has been pretty high for several years. It is normal now, and one morning even read 106-68. I am not a spring chicken anymore, and was happy to see a 540 for the total testosterone reading.

Probably the biggest surprise is that I don’t really miss wheat products. I might just keep this going as long as I can. I feel fuller longer when eating other things besides a bunch of bread.

Hey thats wonderful, thanks for sharing. People always look at me like I am crazy when I suggest giving up wheat but they feel so much better after and there health and weight improves.

Its impossible to totally avoid it almost and not become anal over it. Small amounts here and there should be fine but like I mentioned before its the sheer volume of it we ingest that causes the problems.

Dont know if your interested but if Pizza is a favorite of yours you can make a cauliflower crust that is really good and hold like pizza crust. Its amazing how good it is really.

Here is the recipe I used.

The Secret Life of Cauliflower (pizza crust, garlic fingers, fried rice and whipped potatoes) | Amy Layne Paradigm Blog

I changed it and use 1/2 cup of mozzarella and 1/2 cup of cheddar. The flavor is better. Keep up the good work.

Nice! I bookmarked the site.

The only thing that I will not compromise on is animal protein, so going vegan is out for me. I limit my beef intake to once or twice a week, at the max though. There are too many things that lower testosterone and raise estrogen levels in men (smoking, drinking, etc.). Plant protein is just not the same. Many of the diseases normally associated with aging and fatty diets, such as cardiovascular disease, actually have their root in lower T levels.

Oh I agree. I tried vegan once and its sucked LOL. The link is strictly for the recipe. I didnt even look at the rest of her site really. Humans are omnivores whether we like it or not. If we weren’t the gods would have gave us molars for all our teeth. The fact that we grow and have incisors and molars shows we are genetically predisposed to eating both plants and meat. This is something that the hard core vegetarians seem to ignore.

I agree about to much estrogen’s in products. Its just my opinion and theory but I really think the standard American diet is part of whats feminizing men.

It used to be you had just plant estrogen’s which were not enough in themselves to really cause this.

Now because of the hormones added to meats to increase the size of the animal there are estrogen’s in meat unless you buy hormone free of course. Its in everything though.

If you eat food stored in plastics which is usually some sort of processed food there are estrogen’s in the plastic that leach into the food, even meat. I remember going to the butcher with my mom when I was a kid. He never used plastic, meat was always wrapped in paper. I still see the butcher and I would say 70% of the meat my kids ate is wrapped in paper.

There are hormones in dairy products as well. We drink raw milk and eat raw cheese but I get that from my family usually.

If you store hot food or cook (microwave) in those convenient little glad or ziplock containers the estrogen in the plastic leaches into the food. I switched over to all glass a long time ago.

If you drink bottled water and leave that bottle in the sun the estrogen in the plastic is leaching into the water.

Its the volume of estrogen’s we are exposed to that is causing the problems. They first noticed it when studying why girls seem to be getting there periods at earlier and earlier ages now. Its why 10 year olds are getting boobs already and 16 year olds look developmentally 25.

If you look at the statistics more and more men are having some sort of erectile dysfunction earlier and earlier in life as well.

When people say to me “aren’t you worried about using mones, they are hormones ?” Some people think I am a hypocrite because I talk about the dangers of hormones in foods but use synthetic mones. I tell them I don’t ingest mones. The sheer volume of hormones we are ingesting without our knowledge is far far more damaging and dangerous then the tiny amount that may** make it past the barrier in our skin from synthetic pheromone perfumes. The way pheromones are suspended usually they just dont make it past that barrier. Pheromones inhaled have a different function in the brain then they do in the body as well. I worry more about the ziplock container someone just threw in the microwave then I do mones.

When you put two and two together you get four no matter how you look at it. I don’t think the food industry set out for this to happen. It’s just a side effect they really didn’t anticipate. Tests show the small amount of left over hormones we ingest from meat alone is not bad but when you add in all the other factors its not just a small amount anymore.

OK sorry for the tangent LOL Its a subject that gets me going. :stuck_out_tongue: Anyways… if you are financially able support your local hormone free and organic farmers and certainly don’t give up meat. Fat is not what makes people fat. Quality meat has nutrients we need to survive and thrive.

tisha,

No, what you said is very applicable to the topic. The big body builder types are always trying to increase T levels to build mass.

It is very coincidental that I was just reading about plastics a few days ago, and here you bring it up. I think all the men who enjoy being men need to take notice. I have known for a while that it is not good to heat up foods in plastic, but wasn’t aware of what exactly was leeching into the food. Now I know. I am replacing all my food storage containers with glass.

I have heard of very young men having ED problems. 20’s and 30’s, with the occasional teen. :open_mouth: I couldn’t imagine. The usual suspect is porn usage, which holds merit, but once you think about the normal diets of young people.. everything is wrapped and boxed so nicely so it sits on a shelf, or in the freezer section. And all you have to do is put a vent hole in the plastic and pop it in the microwave. We all do that without thinking.

Hormonal replacement is still in its infancy and not fully understood. There is more to it than just applying cremes at will. It’s keeping that delicate balance, because it is more than just testosterone and estrogen that plays into the mix. Unfortunately, it might take generations before the full impact is realized, and big business will most likely try to cover up to limit liability.

Its been about a month, getting any results?

I second cutting out glutens, I did an exclusion diet a few years ago and discovered I had a bit of a sensitivity to gluten.

At the same time I cleaned out my intestinal tract for a month taking psyllium hulls and a detoxing/Candida cleanse.

I didn’t loose weight but my upper body become wider at the shoulders from weightlifting and lost 2" from my waist bringing me down to 32" and giving me nice abs. Libido is better then when I was 16

Find out if you have any food sensitivities and clean up your digestive system!

I have lost 5 lbs so far. I lift weights 3xweek plus do 30 min cardio. I eat about 1500-1700 calories a day and I don’t eat too much bread, pastas etc. Down from 180 to 175.

Waist hasn’t come down by much though maybe 1/2 inch. I have built some more muscle there with weighted exercises. I think that is my mistake.

I work out 3 xweek full body 3 sets large muscle groups, 2 sets small ones.

I also take a very good product / appetite suppressant/ called SafSlim available at all GNC. It has really killed my appetite.

I find it I do too much cardio I get hungry and it works against me. Too much weights and I am exhausted. I need a delicate balance.

Haven’t increased my poundages since I got up to a nice number. Pretty much stayed there… is this a mistake?

P.S. as a guitar player I don’t need thick construction worker fingers. In fact I need to be skinny on the fingers. So I only do machines. i find they don’t work grip directly so my fingers stay skinny and flexible. I trains biceps and triceps on machines as I find this doesn’t effect my grip either but improves my arms. My forearms I don’t work out at all. I figure practicing several hours a day is enough work on my hands.

One month in now, wheat free, and hitting new lows in weight as of this morning. My son, who is 26 and really into working out and eating right, found humor in my diet until he heard the results and the science behind it, then got very interested.

How can bacon, eggs, and potatoes everyday for breakfast (large portions) be healthy and encourage weight loss, especially when doused with hot sauce?

I am doing what I can live with from this point forward. There is no date that I will say, OK, my diet is over. I am doing no less than a lifestyle change and let me weight go to where it finds comfortable. I don’t spend my days hungry and looking forward to the next bite of food. If I get hungry, I eat. It’s basically knowing what to eat.

I know I’m a bit late to the party, but I’m currently reading “starting strength” by Mark Rippetoe, and for increasing strength, he advises novices to eat between 3500 and 6000 calories a day, including a gallon of milk assuming a body fat percentage of less than 20% (I’m abridging the material, so please be sure to read the book yourself). He basically states that it is easier to get lean than it is to build muscle so a novice should concentrate on using his period of most rapid adaptation (being a novice) to its greatest advantage and not hold yourself back from gains in order to try and get a 6-pack from the start.

Sometimes potatoes helps people lose weight but generally they won’t necessarily have any effect on your weight loss attempts.

I think this is a healthiest way to start your day with these high fat bacon, eggs and potato’s in the breakfast.
