Never cut your own hair (unless you really know what you are doing) Part 1

I have been letting my hair grow out, and have been starting to look and feel kind of like a hippie chick. That was not good. I needed to do something about it.

So, the night before last, I begin to browse online, trying to decide what to do, and what kind of hair cut or shaping I would want, and the best way to communicate that to a hairdresser (which I didn’t have yet either, previously spoiled by Newbury Street salons).

As I browsed, I came upon a hair cutting discussion group, with a fool-proof method of cutting one’s own bangs. There was only positive feedback from others who had successfully done this, and even a little video someone had made actually doing this as well.

I had not even considered bangs. In fact, I don’t think I ever even had bangs (or a fringe, as they also call it) in my entire life. So, at around 12:30am, when I should have been sleeping , I suddenly decide, hey I can do this, this doesn’t look so hard, I think its time for me to try bangs!

I grab a comb and the scissors from my desk and take them into the bathroom, by the mirror. Following the fool-proof instructions, I measure the one inch in from the center of my hair line, and then make the little triangle with my thumbs. After pinning back the rest of my hair, I isolate the properly measured-off amount of hair, isolating even a little less, to be safe, just in case I messed up somehow.

The instructions, and the video, said not to cut straight across, but to cut the hair upwards. The girl in the video already had bangs, she was just trimming hers to demonstrate. The hair I had isolated was long, and I didn’t know how I could do the “upward” cutting thing. So, I cut the hair across, thinking that once I got rid of the length, then I could “cut upwards” more easily. I also thought that cutting it by my nose would give ample length to work with.

Spproinngg!! The moment the scissors went all the way through the chunk of hair I had pulled taut, it bounced and shrank up, even shorter than my eyebrows!! And I had cut the hair at the level of my nose!! How can this be??

My “bangs” stuck up in chunky little tufts, and I looked (and felt) like Alfalfa. I grabbed the scissors again (which I had thrust away from me in my initial horror) and resignedly tried to do the “upwards cutting” to try to at least salvage something, and at least get rid of the awkward-looking chunkiness.

Great, now I looked like Little Lord Fauntleroy. Hey, but that was better than looking like Alfalfa. I gave up and went to bed.

The next morning, I washed my hair, and realized that now I would have to blow dry it if I wanted the bangs to not look wierd. Great, no more “wash and wear”, I was now “high maintenance”. No more camping for me. Or swimming at the beach either. Unless I wanted to pack a blow dryer with me everywhere. What have I gotten myself into??

LOL…I let my niece (she was 18 at the time) cut my hair once. Figured she couldn’t go wrong, she was using clippers and the proper attachment (#4 or 6, can’t remember, fairly long). I had a basic “wake up in the morning, run my fingers through it and go” type haircut without it being a buzz.

Halfway through the haircut…

“Oops”

The one word you never want to hear your barber or your brain surgeon say.

“Um, since when have you had a cowlick?”

“I’ve NEVER had a cowlick”

“Well…”

I reach back, and to my horror, there is a spot of hair on the back of my head that is approximately 1/4" long. It’s too big of a spot to overlook. I immediately grabbed the clippers and examined them, attachment was still firmly in place, there was NO WAY she could have cut my hair that short. But there it was. The only plausible explanation was that my hair had decided to have an instant growth spurt, changed it’s mind mid-spurt, and went back to where it was. In the end, I ended up with a Pauly Shore “In the Army Now” haircut, aka short buzz. I got SO tired of people rubbing my head, and I discovered that my ears look absolutely enormous when I have no hair. Thank god I’m not at risk for going bald.

Tresseme light hair spray works wonders if you don’t have a lot of time to mess with your hair, and doesn’t reek like a lot of hair sprays.

Oh dear. :open_mouth: They sure do make it look easy, don’t they. Lesson learned. Thank God it grows.

My mom owned a Beauty Salon, so I literally grew up in one. I also worked for a Beauty Supply Distributor, doing outside sales, for several years. We used to attend shows and seminars all over the country. I’ve seen the best and worst hairdressers in the industry. Trust me, I know a good stylist when I see one. I also know when to go running for the door and have on more than one occasion.

Cut my own hair? Nevah!!! I wouldn’t even let a friend do it. In fact, I’m so fussy, only five people have touched my hair in my entire life…I know. :open_mouth:

I like Paul Mitchell’s Super Clean Gel to lay any hair that wants to be up…down.

Hugs for {{{Ms. Little Lord Fauntleroy}}}.

Bella

LOL, its not so bad now…I called around and found someone to fix what I had done. Of course I was told that I would have to blow dry it and I would have to use hair spray (ick, no way).

So far, I have blow dried it (no hair spray), but there must be something I can do, or maybe put in my hair when its damp, so that I am not a slave to the hair dryer.

Paul Mitchells Super Clean Gel? Is it gunky at all? Because I have super fine hair, thats what some people call “sturly” (straight-curly), kind of wavy when and where it feels like it, but also straight.

I’m noticing, in the past couple days, that if I get my hair a little dampish(in a light rain, or if I perspire a little by my forehead) the ends of my bangs curl a little, and make the most annoying little “wings” (of course others think its cute, but I can’t stand it ).

Ah, well, it’ll grow out. Bella, how do you find a good hairdresser anyway? In Boston, I went to a really good (and expensive) place, and I guess got lucky with the person I got, and just stuck with her the whole time I was there.

There is one place that is supposed to be really good here (also expensive though), in Kailua-Kona, called Icicles. I have not ventured there yet, though. My poor hair has to rest and recover first

I cut my own. Mine is very curly and I know how to get is right.
