Protestant (Work) Ethic
Wikipedia provides a decent overview of Protestant Ethic:
Wikipedia then goes on to describe criticisms of Protestant Ethic, such as non-Protestant and non-Christian cultures which have become materialistic and prosperous. I think this misses the point. I want to discuss a specific attitude toward one’s place in life which starts with the Calvinist concept of predestination:
So if you are one of the few who are to be successful, it is because God odained it would be so – long before you were to accomplish it. Are you one of God’s favored humans destined to succeed or are you a reprobate who will burn in eternal damnation? You don’t want that do you? Better show us you are one destined to recieve God’s grace! It is not good enough to simply do your best, which may not be good enough. No, if your destiny is a positive one, certain things are expected. If it’s 10% more than you are capable of then you’ll give 110%. And that’s all there is to it, Buddy. If you’re not up to it then go to hell. Protestant Ethic. Git 'er done!
Spiritual Energy
Vishuddi is the sanskrit word for the throat chakra. Chakra means wheel or perhaps vortex is a better translation. We are talking about energy vortices. It is difficult to talk about some things without using energy concepts that Western science prefers not to recognize, like chi, prana, kundalini, orgone. Such concepts have a long history in the East. Not so in the West. In his popular Bioenergetics [psychotherapeutic modality] work Alexander Lowen tried to avoid discussing these concepts explicitly, though his coworkers were more frank about seeing auras and manipulating energy. Lowen’s work was an outgrowth of the dicoveries of the German psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich. Reich escaped from nazi Germany only to die in an American prison as a result of FDA persecution for his work with orgone energy.
Now, I am assuming that Protestant Ethic results in an energy block in the area of the throat. It is the pride – perhaps arrogance – of someone who is up to the hard work. Whiners go to hell. Working though the pain requires choking off impulses to whine or cry as well as cutting off feelings from the body (below the neck). Tension in the neck inhibits energy flow from below as well as verbalizations. One’s tone of voice is affected. Ever try speaking Ebonics with a British accent? Descendants of slaves are more likely to see hard work as the hallmark of exploitation than as a stairway to heaven. People whose forebears were enslaved, defeated or colonized might have an aversion to P93 Instant Honkey Vishuddi Block or the L.A. version, Instant Anglo Attitude. On the other hand, if you want someone on your team who is going to pull his own weight or die trying, you may take great relief in hearing that P93 ring in his voice.
Neurolinguistic Programming
In striclty NLP terms we know that different sensory modalities are associated with different tonal shifts. Visual is softer. Auditory is more shrill, tense. Kinesthetic is deeper. The P93 ring is a combination of Auditory and Visual with very little Kinesthetic. Sometimes the lack of Kino can even create an effeminate (castrated) quality as the body is cut off from the intellect. The voice of guilt (auditory) overrides both visual temptations and shame (visual). Remember the iconic movie scene with the British Headmaster caning the errant pupil’s bare bum in front of the class. Why doesn’t he run away? The voice (auditory) of authority overrides both the shame (visual - seeing classmates eyes on him) and the opportunity to escape (visually seeing escape routes). Obviously, the Kinesthic is completely subordinated as he learns to take the pain and control himself. Submodality analysis may go further in describing the P93 voice tonality – but that’s all I’ve got today.
Given the diminished kinesthetics, I doubt that this aspect of P93 effects would be very sensual. Given that energy flow to the head is blocked, I doubt that it would be very spiritual except in a Calvanistic sense of the term. It would, however, make one appear attractive as a good team player who pulls his own weight and respects authority. It may enhance one’s status in so far as he appears to be part of the (once) dominant culture and is clearly not the image of a deadbeat or moral reprobate.
