perception vs. reality: a test on how far mixes actually carry

i’ve been doing some tests recently using the report template and there’s that section titled “range of effects.” i always just use some guesstimation and go with the flow. ever since my mx315 test i’ve wondered how far a mix actually carries. what piqued my interest was when i went into a store. the salesgirl closest to me paid no attention, the one in the middle of the store was neutral, and the one in the back was the friendliest. could this be from the range of mx315? then today during my mx320 test, i got what i think was a hit. since mx320 is being reported as a “lingering” phero, i wanted to know exactly how far i could get to still have effects but also remain casual and not intruding. i had to test.

the disclaimer
keep an open mind with this test. it’s not very scientific; it’s just me, a pot of water, tape, and pheros. the crucial point is that it is also subjective; i am the one testing the range. my results may be different than if you tested, or if some person with a really sensitive nose tested. lastly, i tested based on scent alone, not if the actual molecules were getting to me. i can smell it = the range goes that far; i can’t smell it = the range does not go that far. i’m also pretending i don’t know there is something to be smelled. as you will read later i just breathed normally and took occasional sniffs (sniffs are hits themselves and big ways to get hits).

the stuff
1 paper towel
1 sheet of plastic wrap
water in a pot
yardstick
tape
paper and pen for notes

the setup
i marked a starting point with tape. from there, i marked off every 3 feet up until 21 feet. these would be my testing points. i tested in a near draftless basement, a/c and fans off, room temp probably near 73* F. (it’s naturally cold in my basement) i had just gotten done with a workout so i was freshly showered and i scrubbed the mx320 off me from earlier. i hoped the steam from the shower would clear my nose too.

my attempt of getting close to skin just short of making some kid sit there for 20 minutes was to heat water to near 98.6* F, then cover it with plastic wrap and a paper towel. i chose to use a paper towel because i thought the plastic would heat up way too easily and then become 98.6* F, but normal skin is not that hot.

i heated some water up to about 100* F, then placed it down at the starting point and covered with plastic and the towel. after a few minutes the water temp read close to 99* F and i figured the towel was slightly warm (outside skin temp) at this point. i sprayed:
2s p104, neroli scent
2s mx203, game scent

now that paper towel is ready to go pick up girls. 4 total sprays, close to average for a mix, and 50/50 blend of game and neroli. i was going to add akuto too but i didn’t know how well that would work with this “skin.” all while spraying i wore a painter’s mask and also held my breath. immediately after spraying and before i passed out from lack of oxygen i fanned my hand over the “skin” a few times to simulate some movement like sitting down; however, this test was assuming the wearer (the pot of water) came into a store (fanning of my hand) and sat down to read a book or have a drink (motionless pot). after that i ran across the basement out of the range of testing.

the test
i let the mix permeate the environment for 5 minutes before testing. also, i tested backwards. it is common that after spraying something, even if it’s just a shot of mx292 before going out, it will carry 3 feet or maybe fill up a room. i’ve had plenty of times where guys would walk past my room right after i sprayed and make a comment like “oh, getting ready for a big night eh?” i did not want to test “forwards” and then have the residual scent be caught in my nose and throw off the rest of the test. also, if i tested forwards, i would “carry” the scent with me as i moved, also throwing off the rest of the test.

CRAP i just got a phone call as i was typing this and now i’m back and forgot what i was going to type. argh… hopefully the results still make sense but if something doesn’t or i get called out on something, maybe i’ll remember. ack.

i stood at each point for 2 minutes: 30 seconds standing there, 30 seconds pacing on the radius (21 ft radius from start, 18 ft, etc. as best i could around furniture and stuff), 30 seconds walking back to previous test points and back again, but never once crossing the test point, and then the last 30 seconds i stood there again. during this time i would breathe normally and at the end of each 30 second period i would take a deep sniff.

oh i think i remember what i was going to type now. after each test point i would blow gently into a tissue to try to clear my nose. all these sniffs can get rough.

i wrote constantly on my paper as i tested. the following is just what i wrote, word for word. here we go…

21 feet: nothing. it’s damn cold down here (note: haha, i would write that).
sniff #1: nothing
still nothing
sniff #2: nope
nothing
sniff #3: nothing
nothing
sniff #4: nothing

18 feet: nothing
sniff #1: nothing
still nothing
sniff #2: nope
nothing
sniff #3: nothing
nothing
sniff #4: nothing

15 feet: nothing
sniff #1: nothing
still nothing
sniff #2: nope
nothing
sniff #3: nothing
technically start reading here
very faint. a mind trick, even?
sniff #4: very faint.

12 feet: i can tell something is in the air, probably wouldn’t attribute it to anything though.
sniff #1: still very faint.
nothing.
sniff #2: still very faint.
nothing.
sniff #3: faint. stronger?
more scent-y
sniff #4: something is there. but what?

9 feet: definite scent here.
sniff #1: i would think “oh, somebody smells nice.”
i can smell it.
sniff #2: same as #1
faint at 12 feet and gone beyond that
sniff #3: more faint than #2 (note: maybe the air currents from me moving weakened it?)
scent is slightly coming back now, still a bit faint or it’s a mind trick
sniff #4: same as #1

at 6 feet and closer everything was the same, and that was “yeah, i can smell something good.”

the conclusion

  • at 6 feet and closer, the target can definitely smell something. if it’s an attraction mix s/he may associate it with you. however, if you’re at 6 feet or closer and waiting for the target to come to you, you’re doing it wrong. that’s prime closing distance. let the mix hit the target and then bring the mix over there.
    be your mix.
  • we can see that after 5 minutes of permeation, the mix barely hangs on at 15 feet and is all gone at 18+ feet. you’ll want to keep this in mind for testing. say you’re going to be buckystars for 20 minutes. a good spot would be somewhere in the middle between the line and the seating area. you can hit those standing in line and those sitting. keep in mind that this is not an infinite growth function. sitting at buckystars all day does not mean you’ll fill the whole place up. i would say 15 feet is the max, especially at a place like buckystars where other (stronger) scents are present.
    help the pheros help you.
  • 6-12 feet is what i call the “vibe” range. say you’re at a bookstore and you see a target standing in one of the aisles browsing a book. you stand in the same aisle but look at a different shelf, possibly 6-12 feet away. after a few minutes (say, 5) the target may start to get a vibe. attraction, social, whatever. if you’re the only person around, it might get associated with you. look for ioi, dihl, anything that you can act on. if you’re not the only person around, you need to act quicker before the target moves out of vibe range or somebody jacks your sig. continuing the bookstore example, you could look over at the shelf in front of the target and say “oh, are you planning to study for a test?” or “how do you like that author?”
pheros are like a crumb trail leading to a great surprise.

i hope this test gives a good feel as to how far mixes can go. as i mentioned earlier, your results may vary, your targets’ results may vary, you standing outside on a windy day may vary the results, etc. this is more for the “day game” bookstore warriors, the shopping mavens, the salesperson chatters where distance is key and outside scents are relatively light. it does not really make sense for a smoky bar or crowded club.

oh yes. another conclusion:

  • i’m a bored college kid with too much time on my hands.

While not entirely scientific these are some awesome subjective tests with good bottom line results to keep in mind for the scent. I think you’re probably really close to what the scientific test would look like, with the variables I can think of being:

  1. The potential that pheromones travel much farther/shorter than other scentable molecules in your mix.

  2. The ph balance of putting it on skin. Perhaps the dispersion into the air reacts differently.

Thanks a lot for the research!

Nominated! Jay this is great! I think it jibes with what a lot of reports hint at; 6-12 feet is what I tend to think of as maximum, most of the time closer to get good effects. Thanks!

Thanks jayarea! Reps!

thanks guys. forgot to add one more group of users that this test is good for: students (duh). in social situations it’s easier to get closer to the target; in school situations, generally the target is sitting with friends. 12 feet should get you enough seats down (or immediately behind or in front, depending on how you work) for full effect.

very good points. it is almost like there isn’t a “scientific” way to test this, as pheros are very subjective both in the user and target, and including the environment, etc. i.e. projecting an alpha/attraction vibe but not being congruent.

i’m familiar with 3 feet because of golf (putting), and roughly six feet because that’s how tall/long sarah is when she lays down flat on the bed (let’s keep it clean here guys ), but outside of that it’s a duck hunt. my own reports usually list 10 feet as the max, maybe slightly more if i use the stronger game in mx292 or pair it with a heavy dose of akuto. it was neat to see just how far 10 feet is, and pretty obvious to see that once you got past 12-15 feet, it wasn’t easy to smell things. if a nice-smelling person caught my nose from 21 feet away, i would probably look around the other way to see if anybody was closer.

thank you.

cool experiment. note however that pheromones are effective even if somebody can not consciously smell them - they operate at much more primitive levels. i read somewhere that man’s innate sense of smell is not much worse than that of a dog - it is just that we are unaccustomed to relying upon it and so it is not as developed.

I agree with pheroquirk. I also remember reading posts by Jasmin stating that they use plant and animal pheromone carriers that can take the molecules much further than could be said for the range of smell.

Fun test though.
The Benchmark = The stenchmark.

agreed as well. a better name for this test could be “how far scents in mixes carry.” while not the major players, scents do help in setting a tone, and it’s much easier for targets to attribute any new feelings to “that great smelling guy/girl over there.”

All in All.

Be Your Mix.

word. tigerlilly stresses this in her thread on mx320. we stress this to new guys as they’re coming in from the intro forums and starting their own threads and journals, and it’s important that we not lose track of this ourselves.
