I am not buddhist - I am Christian- but I have always been fascinated with Buddhism. I was reading one of the buddhist websites, ( I think it was Mahayana not Theravada) and they said we should “refrain from using perfume or cologne.” I didn’t understand why they would mention that. Maybe they know about mones and don’t recommend them ? What if one uses them with the right intention of making good friends, and not just to use girls for sex? Or is this opinion isolated to the maker of the website? I am guessing they wouldnt approvae one’s using mones either.
What would catholic priests say, if you tell them about mones? How about pastors of protestants? I was just curious. Will they say that it is unethical? Against religion? Why or why not? Any devoted religious person here that can answer this?
Well I’ve definitely given it some thought and here’s my conviction on the matter…
As a Christ follower, the first thing I think of is love your neighbor as yourself (2nd greatest commandment). Basically the golden rule. I also think about our commercialized and sanitized, pigeonholed society and how we are in many ways alienated from each other. I believe God made pheromones to be the non-verbal communicators in our creation and our gut feeling as the interpreter. Our GI tract has as many neurons as our brain and the two are connected by I believe the vagus nerve. This is how we can spot a fraud or determine sincerity in another’s actions.
As a Christ follower, I believe ethics are paramount. My intention is to replace what may be missing from the effects of chemicals, processed food, pollutants, and to promote an environment of cooperation and perhaps healthy competition where we all spur each other onto excellence.
I want to be a one-woman man because I believe the design intent of healthy, loving human society is strong families without the threat of betrayal.
It is interesting that Buddhism prohibits perfumes, colognes… makes me think of how another religion prohibits pets… and how certain christian sects ban makeup and any adornment. In the bible, there’s a place where God says he will adorn his metaphorical bride, Israel (the people) with a ring in her nose. And the Song of Solomon is very artfully romantic and sensual.
I believe God wants us to celebrate beauty and attraction within the heart-safety of married commitment. And until that marriage, with respect to not use others. Song of Solomon charges not to awaken love before its time, and that is the balancing act, how do you show affection without going to far? I think we often are tempted to do things to own and dominate others, to build a harem as it were. Ultimately this is non-productive to a healthy society and is no context to raise children. Is it any wonder that the book Brave New World depicted a society of babies from bottles, raised by machines and institutions and runaway sex was pushed on the adults, with drugs to assuage the uneasy feelings experienced during that? Are there evil forces hell-bent on destroying and corrupting the healthy way with the aim to destroy and exterminate or enslave humanity and the human race? I believe so.
I think sex within the proper boundaries is good, slavery to sex is not.
I also thought tonight how preoccupation with sex can distort our priorities, such as not saving money for hard economic times, not being diligent to be efficient and fully ethical in our other activities. Like we think we have it made, so we have lots of free time to pursue pleasure (not just sex) and then we neglect the shoring up and wise handling of our economy, defense, policies, laws, institutions, the way we handle money personally… then we’re in big trouble and facing multiple crises.
I think Islamic female dressing rules such as scarf and non-transparent fabric usage, prevent pheromones from diffusing to avoid attraction between individuals, except husband. Decoding the unique phero signature of each others, (which contain eigenvalues of each individual, some unique information that states how distinguishable each men from other men, and how distinguishable a woman from other women ), can be understood as marriage considered as a sacred bond between spouses, and limiting the phero-signature decoding between
spouses and close family members which also have close eigenvalues to them genetically. . Decoding each others phero signature and feeling a fulfillment from it might mean in a way attacking someone elses spouses right to conserve the intimacy of one to one phero-signature combination between spouses. Just an opinion.
Persoanlly, I think, if you tell religious leaders, they would probbaly tell you not to wear mones. They wouldnt understand what these really do and would think of them as sex toys or ways to induce girls to have sex … only if getting them laid with these were that easy
Church singles service is one of the best places to get laid. Sex is hotter when it’s forbidden. Much better results than single’s bars and clubs. And mones work great in church but I’d lean towards the social and uplifting enhancing ones. You don’t wanna be too obvious but everyone is hardwired to bump uglies so it’s not like they need much encouragement.
Why? The women at singles fellowships are there for the sole purpose of snagging men. I often just sat back and looked cute and somehow women at church feel safe enough to approach and initialize contact. I’m amazed at how often I got asked out. They’re bold as hell. A little bit scary. Too many women trying to start over after bad breakups and divorces. I think they figure church boys are safer than the sleazes in bars. It’s actually the opposite. The cleaner cut and more polite and devout the guy, the bigger horndog he is. Half the people make the alter call for sexual sin…
The main gotcha is most are looking to get married so keep that in mind. After you get a little honey on the old stinger they start pressuring you.
I mean it more in the context of simply attending church to meet women with the whole singles fellowship set aside. I can fake sincerity to a certain degree in public but its hard to hide my disdainful demeanor when it comes to church. Religion is great and all I just get so bored during mass and then you gotta stand and sit and stand and sit.
I want to gauge the honey for a LONG while before I even sample any much less eat it I along with many men realize that marriage can be our undoing so we might as well do it with someone we can actually see as a significant other as such.
Anyway when I start going back to catholic church again I’ll recall and keep in mind what you said.
I won’t pretend to be an expert on any type of Buddhism, but I know that balance is considered to be very important, and since Buddhists do use incense to encourage certain states, we can conclude that they acknowledge that scent has a powerful effect on a person. So you can imagine that wearing the same scent all day, everyday will cause an imbalance.
Go to an aromatherapy site and look at all the different effects which different smells have on people. Now imagine that some of those scents with positive effects also have some negative effects, e.g. excessive “focusing” may also cause a little bit of “irritability,” or maybe focused states enforce a beta brain wave and hamper you from dropping into gamma for your meditations.
Also, acetone, benzaldehyde, bezyl/ethyl acetate, etc. are not good for you to be breathing in all the time. People who complain that perfume/cologne gives them a headache are often especially sensitive to these toxic compounds that comprise a large part of virtually all fragrances.
Many times its not the religion which is the culprit but the mortal priests who may have interpreted things within the limits of their own warped life experiences. This is a common problem across all major religions, Christianity, Buddhism. Hinduism or Islam where the essence of original teaching gets lost in translation / corrupted by the interpretation/world view of the smaller men across the generations.
I mean no offence to followers of any religion !
I was introduced and studied Eastern religion through Alan Watts…man I think I spent 6 years of my life reading every book and listening to every tape he made…I wasn’t certain then but, I’m pretty much an agnostic-atheist- secular-humanist ..whew, that’s a mouth full!
Anyhoo…i think you might be talking about the 8th of the “precepts” which says …
“I undertake to observe the precept to abstain from …use of garlands, perfumes and personal adornment.”
I thought about it today…I’m an agnostic atheist, but I thought about going to a church singles type event…mingling with them while wearing my mones, getting them nice and attracted and then telling them I’m an atheist… It might be fun…
Personally, I would wear mones to a Christian/church single’s event, if it is held OUTSIDE of church. I would not even think about wearing or bringing mones to church. The sole reason for one’s going to church should be to honor/worship God, develop his spritual life and become a better/kinder/holier person. I find it quiet distasteful and disrespectful to go to any religious institution to pick up girls. Picking up a girl that belongs to a certatin sect/religion - I don’t think there is anything wrong with it, as long as you’re not doing it in a cathedral, mosque, temple or whatever. Also, on note, I don’t discriminate girls (for sex or dating) based on race, color, or religion - but mostly on beauty, lol
