Rant about my strict sister as a stepmother: advice to listen without judging

Hey, I’m just feeling the need to rant about something. . .

I have a 12-year-old niece who is married into my family. I love and adore her to death, but I can never adequately express how sorry I feel for having my older sister as a stepmother. My older sister is the most intolerant person I know. She practically raised me while I was growing up, and it was honestly a living hell quite a bit of the time. My mom would like to buy her granddaughter gifts, but my sister makes it almost impossible for anyone to buy any gift for my niece. She won’t let her have anything. She won’t let her have smelly stuff, nothing with glitter, nothing that makes noise, no candy (though my niece is a little chubby, so I can understand that), as well as other things too numerous to count. About the only safe thing to buy my niece is clothes, and even 12-year-old girls get tired of getting clothes eventually.

My sister is also a huge hypocrite. She threw a spa party at her house and I went cuz I hadn’t seen her in awhile and I wanted to visit her. I was wearing a red sweater that I looked incredible in. EVERYONE always has a compliment for me whenever I wear it. However, it is a form-fitting sweater, so it shows off the small of my back when I bend over. Because of this, I make sure that the only thing that shows is my back. That means no thongs sticking out, no butt crack, etc. Most people would think this acceptable, right? Not my sis. She chewed me out for being a bad influence on my niece. I turned around and looked at what she was wearing. She was wearing a V-necked top that showed off her cleveage. I pointed this out to her, and she got soooooo mad at me. She later called my mom to complain about it, leaving out the cleveage part.

My sis also won’t let my niece read the fifth Harry Potter book. She’s afraid of my niece turning into a “teenager”. Hmmm. . . quite honestly I don’t think there is much she can do about that. She is practically one already. For those of you who don’t read Harry Potter, the fifth book pretty much contains a lot of swearing, and Harry is pretty much pissed throughout the whole book, but for a very good reason. I really hate the rule, because being with my sis and her husband, even with my niece is around, is pretty much like watching an R-rated movie. I’m not even joking. They like to talk about how their landlord once heard them while they were in bed, and every other word coming out of their mouths is the f-word. Honestly, my niece is better off reading the book than visiting them.

Grrr. . . I learned some of this yesterday and I have been steamed about it since. I personally think someone needs to give my sis a swift kick up the @$$. She just needs to learn how to tolerate others instead of stifling them so they won’t disturb her in any way, shape or form.

Oh well. I bought my pheromones yesterday! I wonder when they’ll get here. . .

i know people like that.

i think we all do.

first off, since we can agree that you cannot change her, one thing you can do is feel better about it.

by seeing things from your sisters point of view, you will be in a different place mentally/emotionally and that is the only way you can ever be of help.

imagine for a moment that your sister, while feeling like a sexy mature woman, feels this new responsibility for raising a daughter the right way.

is it possible she feels there will be gossip of her inability to raise a girl?
talk about her shortcommings as a parent, critisism ?

maybe she’s feeling inadequate, and being around women able to handle motherhood/ womanhood is just drawing attention to her own negative feelings.

no one does anything negative unless they themselves are feeling less-than.

from a good feeling place, no one hurts anyone.

judging by her actions in your rant, she is unhappy and fearful.

talking to someone (maybe you) might help.
all she needs is someone to listen without an opinion.

to hear that you are wrong in any way imediatly causes you to put up a wall.

your neice does leave the house, so she will see that not everyone follows the rules mom makes.
she will eventually see what mom says doent mesh with society, and it doesnt mesh with what she does herself.

kids learn by example, i certainly thought my mom was full of sh*t to tell us dont smoke while she puffed

hmmm. . . those are actually some pretty good thoughts. I don’t know how I would talk to her though. She always seemed to get offended and take everything personally whenever I have an opinion other than hers.

I wonder if i could slip her some instant shine somehow. . . it would be a little hard since she’s allergic to perfumes and body sprays (ok, maybe it was unfair of me complaining how she doesn’t let my niece have any smelly stuff. . . )

aww you dont get it …

what she needs is someone to listen, WITHOUT an opinion.

shes RIGHT to get mad when you dont share her opinon, your not in her shoes !

she is completely justified for feeling the way she does because you cannot possibly know whats in her head.

there is no better feeling in the world than to have someone hear you out nuetrally, and say “your feelings matter. i cant know how you are feeling, and maybe you cant know how your stepdaughter is feeling”

pointing out the positives empower people to make healthy decisions from a “positive” point of view, as opposed to “you should be doing this, and shouldnt be doing that”.

ewww, that didnt feel good at all.

pheromones would only help here if you both were feeling pretty upbeat and happy on instant shine…

No, I think i do get it. But my sis is not the kind of person who will go right out and tell me why she thinks what she thinks without a little prompting. In order for me to listen to her, I would have to say something like “I don’t think I quite agree with what your doing. Could you please explain to me why so I can see from your point of view?” I know that it seems like she wouldn’t have a problem expressing her opinion, but she pretty much treats me like a parent treating a child. It’s all pretty much “dont do this” or “dont do that”. If I ask why, she just says “Because I say so.”

Trust me, I really do love hearing both sides of the story. I actually feel you presenting me with this other viewpoint quite refreshing. I know if I posted this rant on facebook, everyone would agree with me and nothing would get done.

Lor is giving you some excellent advice. And as for the ranting? Rant away—we’re here to listen!

Ah, twelve. Remember the days?

Yeah. Me neither.

i remember 12.
nothing like having a 12 yr old at home to help you remember !

Hmmm. . . 12 is only 8 years younger than I am now. . . but I still don’t quite remember it! Lol, I think that was right after I had my acting up stage and actually matured a little. As a result, I was always mature and everyone tries to place me older than I really am!
