Sexual Behavior Activity Tracks Rapid Changes in Brain Estrogen Concentrations

Enzymatic conversion of testosterone to estrogen may allow estrogen to act as a neurotransmitter–a hormone that typically facilitates transmission of messages between nerve cells in the brain. Until now, most neuroscientists thought that hormones like testosterone and estrogen were not able to quickly act on behavior, which would mean a sex hormone response to pheromones would be delayed until after an opportunity had passed. This is evidence for the more rapid responses pheromone users may observe, but which are not readily explained in the existing literature–or for that matter by articles in the Journal of Neuroscience–unless you have an interpreter.
