…Jackie Langlow’s son is 22 years old and has autism. When John wants something to eat, he lets her know with his iTouch.

It’s a formula that works for them. Their journey hasn’t always been this easy.

When John was just two, he suddenly stopped talking and making eye contact; common signs of autism.

He made it through special classes in grade school then came his rite of passage. He made it to his high school graduation.

“That’s another one of those points where you are accepting that your child has autism. You realize that all the dreams you had for that child are probably no going to come true. But as they grow into adulthood you realize there are other dreams that will come true,” said Langlow.

She credits much of her optimism to the Glenwood Autism & Behavioral Health Center in Birmingham. It’s one of only 38 adult autism facilities in the U.S.

It’s the only one in Alabama offering live-in assistance for adults with autism…
