Andrew really inspired me with his A314 journal Andrew's A314 Success Journal and without stepping on his toes, I too have started one.
I think A314 can be a life changer for some people if they take it upon themselves to work on the inner and outter issues that are in need of repair to be congruent with the new or stronger vibe they are putting out.
I am in sort of a crossroads in my life, quite honestly the past 3-4 weeks I have felt like I was beginning to flounder a bit. So like all good baseball managers do with their teams when they start to see mistakes, or losses that can spiral into a demoralising attitude I will go back to the fundamentals. I will be start with the basics and where else do I begin but with what was working for me and making me happy.
I have to be a bit careful, because I am prone to taking on too many things at one time, getting in over my head and not getting anything accomplished. So, I’m hoping to keep myself in check with the goals, and not expect too much of myself but not being too easy on myself either. A balance in life is always a good thing.
Back to basics: Morning Ritual
Sleep: I find when I’m getting stressed out, and suffering from panic attacks small or large, or even if I’m getting depressed, my sleep patterns have changed or are interrupted and I’m not getting enough rest.
Recently I have been going to bed later and waking up later, starting the day off sluggish, and feeling guilty or like a bum.
Exercise: Be in bed by 11pm nightly, no reading, t.v., or music up to half an hour before bedtime. Back to quiet / meditation time.
Gratitude Journal: Gratitude is a must in my life. Not only does it allow me to focus on what’s really important, the good things in life, but it centers me and brings me back to the “now.” Whenever I’m delving into the past, or worrying about the future, if I go into gratitude and start naming off things I am grateful for at that very moment it forces me back into the present, which is really the only place you can exist, the only place you have any power.
I think its important to not just say what you’re grateful for, but to write it down and see it in black and white, it just gives it that much more power, so therefore I will start my gratitude journal over.
Exercise: Every morning, find at least 10 things to be grateful for and write them down in a gratitude journal.
Tao Te Ching: Everyone has their own belief system, something that helps to remind them of the important things in life and the Tao does this for me.
Exercise: After the gratitude journal, read one verse of the Tao every morning.
Reading Time: It is suggested that you spend at least 30 mins a day reading something new, something inspiring, something that will teach you how to become the person it is you want to be.
I do believe at some point you have to put the books down and go out and experience life, but I also have found from my own personal experience that I need inspirational materials whether it comes in the form of books, DVD’s, or audio to keep me motivated.
Exercise: Read for a min. of 30 mins each morning during coffee time.
Journaling: Journaling is a very important part of my life, or it is when I do it consistently. The mind seems to find a way to work out solutions to problems in life when you put it down on paper. In David D’s Deep Inner Game seminar, Dr. Paul suggests journaling as a way to grow as a man. This has been a very effective tool in the past and has helped spur a lot of growth in myself.
Exercise: Every morning I will journal for a min of 30 mins.
Quite Time / Meditation: My morning ritual is never complete without giving myself some quite time to reflect on the things I’ve read, or written, or even to just sit quietly and empty my mind and only focus on my breath.
This has been another effective tool in my arsenal when it comes to dealing with life and all the little pokes and jabs that come along the way.
Exercise: I will spend at least 30 mins of my morning in meditation.
I know this sounds like a lot, but this was my morning ritual for well over 6 months earlier this year. Whenever I missed my morning ritual I felt like my day just wasn’t getting started off right, I was lacking that extra bit of armor to guard myself as I ventured out into the world.
I usually don’t have to be at work until after 3pm, so my mornings if used properly are long with ample time to get whatever I want to get done, done.
GOAL: My goal for the first week of this journal, is to get back on track wiht my daily ritual. If that means no tv, going to bed early and not going out late at night, then that’s what it means.
Edited to add: Week 1 begins now, but in reality is 1 1/2 weeks long. I am giving myself Thursday, Friday and Saturday to get my sleep patterns somewhat normalised so I can start Week 1 on Sunday August 29, 2010. I will be getting up and performing these exercises starting today, but won’t be counting until Sunday.
