The hair loss thread

Well it all started about 2-3 years ago - slow thinning.. temple areas, and what was once a thick head of hair is starting to get somewhat noticeably thin.

So, I pose the question to the conscientious gents (or ladies) of the forum.. What action have you taken or considered to halt or reverse your hairloss? What have you seen work for others?

My reading indicates a combination of propecia, minoxodil and nizoral shampoo may help.

I am very interested to know your thoughts and experiences.

hey mate,
stumbled upon this question and saw no ones answered you yet… so if you’re still around and wondering thought i could help.

i dont know much about pheros yet but i do know stuff about hairloss, being someone who decided to fight it rather than accept it.

so you’re on the right track with the products you mentioned. propecia is called finiesteride (which im sure you know) and it has been shown to block dht which is a major contirubtor to hair loss. blah blah blah you can read all this yourslef anywhere on the net. so, does it work? yeah! it essentially stops the hairloss (or majorly slows it down). i know a few people along with myself that have had excellent results from the product, in fact ai dont know anyone who hasnt had good results. you can expect to stop losing hair after about a month on this product. it may thicken the crown of your head but in terms of regrowth it isnt stunning- but it is an essential and easy to use product to stop hair loss. if you want to start a course youll need a prescriotion. i would reccomend asking the doc for a prescrtiption for proscar rather than propecia. same ingredient only proscar is a 5mg tablet rather than propecia with is 1mg. if you take proscar split it four ways with a tablet splitter and take one piece each day at the same time (if possible). outright proscar is more expensive but over time youl get 4months out of one packet as opposed to having to buy a new pack of propecia each month. if you are serious proscar works out much much cheaper and the same results.

minoxidil- this ones a bit more touch and go. you have to apply it to your head using a dropper every morning and arvo. its sticky, a pain and quite inconvenient but it does seem to work. its also quite expensive becasue (like propecia) you have to continue using it or youll lose the benefits. what it does is stimulate growth in dying follicles. what this means is if your hair is thining it can dramtically thicken that hair by regrowing the dying/disappearing hairs. it does work, but only in areas where there are already some hairs. my advice on this stuff is (despite no company claims to its effectiveness) use it predominantly for the front of your hair line. if your temples are receding then this is excellent for stopping it from further receding and thickening it up. remember too that there are many diffent minoxidil products. u may have heard of rogaine etc but it is no more or less effective than any other product with minoxidil in it. the chemical mionoxidil is what gives you the benefits so dont believe any of the ‘extra special ingrediants’ rubbish. there are many generic brand such as ‘minoxidil’ and ‘hair a-gain’ which are cheap and perefectly effective.

nizoral shampoo- some ppl swear by it, i havent found it much use and really just another expensive product. i know it should and can work but the minoxiidl and propecia are theproducts which really give benefits.

so… i hope that helps. i genuinely believe and recommend proscar and minoxidil- they WILL help. they are no miracle cures, but no miracle cures exist yet so dont get sucked into any hair company or anything. if you use these products as directed regularly and dillegntly they really do help.

my dad, mums dad and all my cousins uncles etc are bald, many before they got to my age. currently i still have a lot of hair and its still thickening after about 8months of these products. no one would know i was suffering from hair loss.

finally i know how it feels- the worst part is thinking you are on a path that only leads one way- to baldness. unlike other illnesses or health issues baldness will not improve with time (unless treated). so i feel for u man but iv been there and am telling you stuff can be done. oh and there are many exciting and potenitally excellent treatments on the horizon. i keep up to date on it all and have a real interest becasue i beleive hair loss for men is so often not regarded as a real problem or a series healthconcern. but i know how hard it can be for men suffering.

i hope this helps! if you or anyone has questions just ask i can probably help as iv tried many differnt things and do no what im talking about!

take care mate. sorry this is so long!

Avodart (dutasteride) is probably going to be more effective than Propecia.

It works for me. Get your DHT levels checked. You may not need to take dutasteride everyday to bring your DHT levels down enough to save your hair. You don’t want abnormally low DHT levels. Men whose DHT gets too low hate Dutasteride, so don’t take too much of it! If your prostate is okay, a couple of times a week is probably more than enough. Dutasteride has a very long half life so it could take months for your body to adjust to a lowered dosage. Don’t start too high.

If you search the Internet, you will find this so called “Double A” treatment, Aloe and Avodart. Break a caplet of Avodart into an ounce or two of aloe vera gel, rub it into your hair and shampoo it out. Do this at least once everyday. The original publication recommended waiting three minutes before shampooing. I found an hour worked much better for me. If your DHT levels are relatively low and your hair follicles are just especially sensitive to DHT, you’ll want the shortest effective time so the dutasteride won’t soak too much past the follicles into the bloodstream giving you undesirable side effects. I have never experienced these side effects, but my DHT was sky high.

I used the “double A” treatment daily for about a year. It started helping with hair loss almost immediately. I do not need to apply dutasteride topically anymore. I do still use aloe gel before I shower. I take oral dutasteride twice a week.

If you break open the dutasteride caplets, be very careful and clean up immaculately afterwards. This chemical lasts pretty much forever. You do not want women or children exposed to it! Wash out the shower thoroughly.

I also found adding one tube of Azelaic acid (20% prescription strength) cream to a bottle of Selsun shampoo helped. Every couple of days I swapped out the Selsun in favor of Nizoral. Scalp itching is a tell-tale sign of follicle destroying inflammation from increasing DHT in the scalp. Nizoral helped.
