I actually got up, and went to work as normal,
at the time the Radio in my car was broken, so I had no news until I was greeted by our secretary with tears streaming down her face, I passed it off as an incident similar to what happened when someone ran into the empire state building. About 45 min later a coworker got a 13" black and white tv working and we watched the video footage from the tv. Before that the radio nor the internet let us know that two planes had hit the towers. we all stood in shock.
This is one of those JFK assassination, Pearl Harbor, Black Monday kind of events and I hope nothing ever tops it in my lifetime.
I woke up, turned on my computer and saw on AOL news that the first tower had been hit. From there I turned on CNN and watched in horror as the second tower got hit.
Driving to work, heard it on the radio. Total disbelief at first, I thought it was another of those bad-taste jokes we get so much of on Australian radio. I remember exactly where I was too - I can visualise it.
In the shower when phone rang frantically over and over. My brother calling to make sure I wasn’t headed into work. I would have taken the express PATH train from Newark to the WTC putting me in the epicenter. I ended up sleeping in that day so I was late and missed it all. Small miracles. Lost some good friends that day
My husband called me from under the South Tower for me to turn on the news so I could find out what was going on. He said there were papers flying around…as I was telling him what was happening the second plane was passing over our house. He said he was going to try to get home, we hung up the phone and the second plane hit the tower above him. I saw all of the flying debris on television and tried to call him back but got no answer. I didn’t see him until 8:30 that night
Just happened to be watching the news when they first started showing footage.
I was at home with my son, who was only 10 months old at the time, and I remember holding him to me very tightly, so tightly that he squirmed to get down. Little irritations and the frustrations of daily life meant nothing on that day, I just wanted to hold my precious little one close. I called my husband at work, then touched base with other loved ones. Then I went to the school and got my daughter out of kindergarten and brought her home.
I think we all gave our priorities a thorough going-over in the days that followed. Connections to family, friends and God became very important, and getting ahead and enjoying the game became secondary, if that. Maybe we should re-evaluate again.
I was at school. I thought it was a joke or some sort of drill because the guy came over the PA to announce it was the same one who does the stuff like “So and So just died from drunk driving” type of stuff.
Had moved to the West Coast from NYC by that time so due to time zone difference, the towers were down by the time I turned on the morning news. At first they were re-playing a close-up of the top of the towers still standing, but the caption on the bottom stated Twin Towers Collapse - the incongruence between what I was seeing and reading was surreal. Then I saw the footage of the actual collapse.
I had worked in both the WTC and the World Financial Center at various times and I kept remembering the swaying of the building on windy days when I was on the upper floors, being stupidly frustrated waiting for the elevators because it took so much time out of my lunch break just to get up and down, the feel of the thick carpet on the WTC lobby, and the sound of the seemingly endless elevator chimes which rang out everytime one landed on the ground floor. They were like tinkling beautiful bells unique to those buildings.
Just walking into a High School math class…Oh wait, that was JFK’s assassination.
I had just gotten out of the shower and went into the sitting room and turned on the TV to get the morning traffic report and there it was. I watched it for about 2 minutes listening to the commentary when the second plane hit.
I was at a boyfriends house.I sat straight up in bed for no reason and went out he was still passed out.I walked past the tv and was like what movie is that?
It wasn’t a movie me and his family sat by the tv in shock.
My parents called to ask if I was seeing this.Mom later said that Dad just sat there in front of the tv all morning holding his head and crying. It was just too horrible and too unreal.
I was on the comp late or in this case early in the AM with the TV on when I began to see the news reports come in. Yeah, it was a depressing day that day. Even after it happened I couldn’t get passed the emo state I was in.
Later on that night I then began to hear jets keep on flying over my house in Santa Ana, CA and it was just eerie because the whole air space besides those jets was quiet. Everything just seemed quiet that day and night.
That was in shockingly poor taste, Reaper. No matter what your views are politically, September 11 was a day of great tragedy and sorrow for our nation. You can place blame wherever you’d like, because no one has the right to dictate your opinions. But please don’t cast your negativity over the graves of our loved ones, fellow citizens and exceedingly brave fallen heroes.
Negative reps from me, as well.
