First journal entry. Didn’t mean it to be so long, sorry, but it seemed to just grow and grow. Updates to follow. All names have been changed.
Happy days, I’m now an ‘uncle’ to a very healthy, gorgeous baby girl, born to my lifelong friend and his fiancee a few days ago. ![]()

I figured this would be an ideal time to project an alpha signature and so I applied a drop of A314 behind each ear and streaked it downwards. Having interviewed recently for another job, I was fully suited up, complete with overcoat, new boots, haircut, everything.
I get these, ‘Holy hell, Admiral on the bridge! Yessir, nosir, three bags full, sir!’ reactions when I’m wearing the suit, so I know that when I feel like working it, I can damned well work it.
The A314 did its job too.
I was the first to arrive at Zoe’s bedside to see my new niece cradled in her arms, spending the first few hours of her life asleep on her mother’s breast.
I leaned over to kiss her on the cheek and forehead. ‘Congratulations, Zoe. She’s beautiful.’
She responded with an angelic smile and tilted her head so that the kiss meant for her cheek turned into a full-on smooch on the lips. Shifts slightly to her right and I move so she can lean her head into my shoulder and neck. I stroke her face and she gives me a lingering kiss on my jawline.
I didn’t read too much into it. For a while, my friend and I were rivals for her affections. The job took me away from home for a very long time and I came back to find the two of them together and engaged.
Zoe and I have been affectionate and flirty, knowing that she has made her choice and neither of us will let anything happen between us.
‘Thanks, sweetheart. By the way, you look and smell gorgeous, Sexy. I’ve got a MAN in here, girls.’
A murmur of approval from the other women - the ones who didn’t have their men present - in the ward and for the first time, I became aware of them. The musky scent of new mothers mixing with the vanilla smell of their newborn babies fills my nose. My nose has become very sensitive to natural body scents - especially female - since using pheromones. None of them were wearing perfume, with one exception of a female visitor, late 30s, who seemed to be looking at me just a little too intently.
I look around and get some waves, smiles, even blushes. One girl, late teens to early 20s, fixes me with an unabashed seductive and vulnerable look for many seconds before glancing away and down to her newborn.
We talk a while, Zoe and I. Her hopes, her dreams for her daughter. How the birth went etc. Dave turns up and we greet each other with a handshake that turns into a friendly power grip and an arm across the shoulders. ‘You’re a dad, buddy.’
‘You’re an uncle.’
Zoe enthusiastically agrees and it’s my turn to feel a little overwhelmed. Some more smiles and looks from the other mothers. I become slightly aware that the female visitor hadn’t taken her eyes off me for more than a few seconds and was locked in conversation with the new mother she was with, keeping their voices hushed.
I leave the new parents alone for a while and drift off to talk to the others. Greeted the dads, uncles, aunts, grandparents, older brothers and sisters, cousins. The men eventually go off to swap tales of fatherhood, older generations relishing the chance to embarrass the younger generation.
Two of the women were openly flirty, one pulling open her top slightly to reveal rather a lot of post-pregnancy cleavage. Smiles, winks, hugs, touching my hands, arms, face etc. I hug them back, make a fuss of the newborns, my social proofing hitting the roof.
Eventually, I have to leave. I hug Zoe and Dave, say goodbye to little Louise and walk out through the double doors. A few metres down the corridor and I hear the doors open again. Glancing at the glass window ahead of me, I can tell it’s the Visitor, and she’s following me.
