I wish that scientist’s warnings were taken more seriously.
While being aware of it and watching it is important its far to premature to act on it. Whats more important is having a plan of action which they do. To impliment the plan of action prematurely when there are other smaller astroids that can cause considerable damage well before 2040 would be irresponsible.
Predicting these things is like predicting which way a tornado will go. There are so many varibles that can change its course and before they spend precious time and resources some of those varibles need to occur.
So I really dont think its that they dont take these things seriously its just premature to act on it seriously.
They have to wait for the 2013 window.
Did you know there are over 300,000 near-Earth asteroids over 100 meters in diameter and approximtely 20,000 that are 140 meters and larger ? This one hasnt even entered the key hole yet.

I did not know that! 
I think it’s more important to be concerned with the one due to pass the earth at ca. 16,000 miles (inside the orbits of geosync satellites like DirectTV) in February 2013. A little twitch caused by earth’s gravity well, and BOOM!!
Also, the military would take 2 years to prepare to repel/redirect it, too late!
