BayRum: When Our Swords did not Collect Rust

Does anybody know the history of or any of old recipes for BayRum cologne???

Very Cool!

I really like the second BayRum with bay, clove, orange, neroli, allspice, cardamom.

What does the carbonate of magnesia do?

The Mary Stewart with the civet looks like one of the earliest pheromones.

Anybody got more?

I still don’t get it. What does the magnesium carbonate in these formulas do?

Magnesium carbonate (commonly known as chalk) raises PH and therefore lowers acidity. It has a mildly astringent drying, tightening effect on skin. Used in cosmetics and for grip enhancement as in weightlifting, gymnastics, rock climbing, etc. It is a lavative (milk of magnesia) when injested in sufficient quantities. It is used as a whitening agent especially combined with hydrogen peroxide in toothpastes and taxidermy.

That’s all good but, what’s it doing in these old perfume formulas? Is this a floculant or some kind of a filteration agent to remove particulant? If that’s the case, is it really needed with oils distilled by modern methods?

Any Ideas?

It lowers the acid level in highly acidic EO’s so it is less likely to irritate the skin.
