I don’t know much about the science behind pheromone production or what affects it.
(sorry if this is in the wrong place)

Not sure of pharo drop… but self esteem would no doubt LOL
Well I was thinking along the lines of priests/monks/etc. who have taken vows of celibacy, not just some guy who never gets laid (since he could still masturbate).
hmmm… this is a good question, I look forward to a good answer, I was merely providing comic relief.
Just so you know I am moving this post the the Pheromone Theory section. It will be better served there ![]()
Well there are not nearly enough studies on this subject but basically abstainace will not lower your normal hormone levels therefore we can conclude it will not lower your natural and normal output of pheromones.
However responsible sex can increase your health and level of hormones therefore in theory it can increase your levels of pheromone output.
It widely and scientifically proven that sex is good for physical and mental health.
For instance …
Its proven every time you have a orgasm levels of DHEA Dehydroepiandrosterone increase in response to ejaculation and sexual stimuli. DHEA can increase the immune system repair tissue and even work as a antidepressant
Both testosterone levels and Estrogen levels are boosted through sexual activity
In one of the most credible studies correlating overall health with sexual frequency, Queens University in Belfast tracked the mortality of about 1,000 middle-aged men over the course of a decade. Its findings, published in 1997 in the British Medical Journal, were that men who reported the highest frequency of orgasm enjoyed a death rate half that of those who abstained from sex. Other studies show that having responsible sex even just a few times a month can improve…
However this doesn’t mean I am suggesting you all run out and hit it LOL Abstinence has its purpose and benefits as well. Lack of sex will not harm your health or pheromone output.

I have been telling my wife for years it was good for my health …
Tish - do you have a link for that study - I am going to email it to her … thanks!
since most of us here wouldnt mind more sex,
i believe the study ought to be printed and sent with every order.
Hmm if I had to take a guess it would be that abstinence would be more likely to increase pheromone levels rather then lower them.
If I’m not mistaken there’s a negative feedback on the testosterone production when you have sex, so the testosterone level get lower after while.
So having no sexual activity would mean a bit higher levels of testosterone.
Testosterone is responsible for the production of at least -none so that would give more -none.
But you’d have to search for scientific reports about the negative feedback thing, I’m not 100% certain, I can’t search them for you right now. Have to learn the last 100 pages before the test tomorrow 9 am (it’s 16:20 pm here so I really really have to study now
)
Well I believe that oxytocin is produced when you have sex w/a partner, it gives you that closesness feeling.
I remember my bf telling me that when he started having sex, that he stopped breaking out. But he made it sound like when he had sex w/a partner (as oppose to alone lol), that is what cleared up his skin. So having sex w/a partner encourages certain hormones that masterbating doesnt?
But yeah Id think just masterbating would lower the amount of Testosterone in the body and that is a major factor in acne. So youd think that alone would affect it.
So yeah Id think a build of up testosterone could possibly affect your phero’s? But then again sex could create more phero’s that you wouldnt have if you didnt have sex w/a partner.
Im just thinking outloud so dont jump on me if Im just plain wrong, please. :o
Personally, I do not think it is healthy for humans in general to not ever have some sort of sex(be it masterbating or w/a partner). It is natural human behavior.
And whlie Priests aren’t suppose to mastebate, they are still human and I am pretty sure some/many do still masterbate, just to stay sane.
Actually this is debatable, There are reports from years ago that indicate not having sex would increase levels but current studies now sate the opposite.
There are a few other studies I have seen
SpringerLink - Journal Article
Same study different journal
Tisha
From the two studies you’ve shown me I can’t really pick one over the other. Neither of the two journals seem very big or highly rated, propably the journal of sports medicine over the chinese universities own journal. I’ll look tomorrow and see if I can find a article in nature or something ![]()
I wasn’t totally certain that’s why I asked to verify it
Well if sexual activities lower the testosterone levels then it should also lower some pheromone levels. Which ones are hard to tell at this time, there is so much we don’t know about this subject. ![]()
As for the question wether your body knows wether or not one is masturbating or having real sex I doubt it. Maybe that the genitals exchange some hormonal information, but that would be canceled with the use of condoms.
The abstract shows that abstinence from sex doesn’t do much of anything to your testosterone levels except on the 4 or 5 day when it spikes then declines. Sexual activity increases testosterone levels.
Your right though there is not enough good info out there on this just involving sex over abstinence. Most studies include alcoholism or Vasectomy.
I Look forward to your info on the subject ![]()
Tisha
Thanks for the articles Tish.
Ah I found an article about the subject:
From
Endocrine response to masturbation-induced orgasm in healthy men following a 3-week sexual abstinence, M S. Exton et al., World journal of Urology volume 19, number 5/ november 2001 pages 377-382
Other then that and the one you provided I couldn’t find any relevant articles. The journal of urology is a better/more trustworthy journal. But then again the study is slightly older.
Even science is not absolute and until there are more studies on this subject you can’t really tell whether testosterone levels rise or drop and what happens to pheromone production accordingly.
My guess is that the answer is age-dependent.
pheromone levels are correlated with hormone levels.
For healthy young people, abstinence will probably not decrease hormone levels.
For older people with declining hormone levels, they may be in a “use it or lose it” situation. In this case, hormone levels may very well decline with abstinence.
There may be some studies on age dependence, but I’m not aware of them.
I have a great many different journals I use, some I pay for membership to but I use a lot of free ones as well. I dont rely on just the larger publications. I think all scientific studies conducted have value. Look at the data collected here. Androtics is small and may not be published in the big popular journals but the work they do is valid just the same.
Thanks for your quote overlord reps, I do have that abstract in my file.
Here are some interesting ones I came across in there. I think they are Pub Med
This one is sort of related. BH may be interested in it.
I guess we can all agree on one thing. Sex is natural sex is fun ![]()
Oh well cant be embedded but you can click on it ![]()
Tisha
Hmm yeah of course it’s true that all studies have importance, but when two studies have opposite outcomes one should look at them closely and decide which one you want to trust.
And yeah sex is a lot of fun ^^
The articles are for Gone with the wind?
Huh LOL No I said BH. Bosshank
He trying to convience his wife sex is good for you ![]()
Haha oh sorry I missed the BH
Of course sex is good for you ^^ otherwise it would feel bad right? ![]()
But yeah there are still a lot of people who believe that if something feels that good it must be doing something very bad too.
Edit: Good luck Bosshank ![]()
A couple of points. The study was extremely small - 10 men. It doesn’t give the information of how long after orgasm the plasma concentrations of testosterone were measured. And there was no follow up.
If the plasma concentrations of testosterone were made immediately after orgasm, the only thing you can say is immediately following orgasm, testosterone levels are lower. Was there a subsequent spike or did the testosterone levels stay low? We don’t know.
