Computer parts & new laptops

I’m going to be taking apart and salvaging some old XT compatables next month. Need a pile of boat anchors? 5.25" 360K drives? 8088 chips? Keyboards?

lolol I’m breaking down and going to buy a laptop asap
any advice?
I need to play DVDs (for presentations) and have the max screen and processor speed bang for the buck
I imagine I’ll buy a new one by the time I need Powerpoint

Check out this one (Computers, Monitors & Technology Solutions | Dell USA), less than $1,000 US.

Giant laptops

Have you seen those in person?

They’re nice, but biiiiiiiig.

The 1920x1200 resolution TrueLife upgrade makes them great for " portable " (emphasis on the quote-unquote) video editing.

We have some Dell laptops for check out. They aren’t quite so “high end video” as people don’t need them for video, only Power Point presentations. Been pretty happy with Dell, though their technical support seem to be a bit “uneven”.

Their customer support is hooooooooorrrrrrribble. I cringe every time I have to talk to them. They blow away the definitition of “Incompetent”.

I’ve run into that too, however, I’ve also run into first rate TS from them. Might be the time of day you call and whether you get the U.S. or India (of course, having done this for over 20 years, I usually have the problem figured out and simply need to go throught TS to get the parts).

What do the experts have to say here? I will be going to college and I need a decent workable “ultra-portable” laptop with long battery life. Right now I’m looking at Fujitsu’s lifebook series.. the ones that have the 8-12 inch screen and has a bay that can be dedicated to a 2nd battery making it last up to 11 hours. It runs around 1.2-1.8 Ghz (ultra-low voltage tech) and 512MB of RAM.

Other than doing simple tasks like surfing the net, Microsoft Office.. do you think these laptops performance would be good enough to run some sort of Photoshop programs and run iTunes? The reason I ask is because one of the models has a bay for compact flash cards and thats what I use for my camera.
