Yes there in the process of upgrading the forum a bit so you will see some new things popping up here and there. I am not sure what version it is though.
We will all have to learn to use the new functions together
And I’m already missing my Buddy List…sniff. It was really nice to have the little box pop up to see who’s on line, rather than actually having to go to “Who’s on line”…to see which of your buddies is still logged on. Any chance for a comeback?
OK Here’s an easy one. Just take a few minutes and make a real difference.
On the global signature block put the HTML tag that tells tells the spiders not to search the signature blocks. That way when we search for specific product name (like MXWhatever) with an outside search engine, it doesn’t come up with everybody’s stash that’s listed in the signature blocks.
How many people search the forum with outside search engines? Raise your hands. UuuhHuh.
OK Who would like to search with a more powerful search engine? Raise your hands. That’s what i thought.
Almost all search engines will do a site specific search. I am still a fan of Clusty » Site Search but there are a thousand more that will do the trick Alt Search Engines
If we do site specific search does it move us up in page rank with that SE? That would make this little HTML tag change worthwhile. And if that does move us up in page rank, then would it be advantegous to consider incorporating several outside SEs into our forum? We must have an SEO nerd around here somewhere that can tell us.
BTW:Has anybody ever submitted us to About the Open Directory Project? It is human edited so getting spidered won’t get us there. Does anybody mind if i submit PheromoneTalk to be listed in the DMOZ directory?
(Why don’t i have the tag box under the reply posting? Or do we only get tags when we start a thread? It would get a lot more use if it was with all the posting screens. The tags aren’t really worth much until there is about a million of 'em)
There will be lots of new things that are happening here at PheroTalk. Some will take getting used too.
Currently the upgraded forum, not yet in its completed state, has a social group function, an album, blog, even a place for projects. You will need to experiment a little and have fun. Change needs to be embraced.
A while back, I do recall, saying that changes are in the works. Wait till you discover how the “thanks” system works along with the rep power.
As far as the search function, that has been updated too. You will be able to search blogs, projects and tags along with posts and threads. Speaking of tagging that is anther thing that will be beneficial, but everything is still being upgraded.
Oh and SteveO changed to Steve because, as my role with Androtics takes on new definition, I wanted my presence to be more formal and thus I dropped the O. It’s still my name when I do pick-up, but on the forum I am Steve, so that I can better serve the community at large.
I agree. I hate the crappy search functions most forums have. They waste so much time!
But we don’t have the typical vbulletin search, you know. We have it set up in a way that’s superior to most forums out there. You can search down to 1 character, use boolean (I want THIS and NOT this), etc.
Unlike most vbulletins, you can search for names like “Clive Christian X” in quotes, and actually get posts that mention the Clive Christian X cologne.
Show me a typical search that you do with an outside search engine that you can’t do on our own search engine, and I’ll see if I can have the engine changed for the better.
The forum is not yet fully upgraded yet, btw, guys. We have a nice update coming soon.
Also, some functions might be taken away temporarily until the search functions are better.
For instance, I don’t like how all new vb system seem to have their own independent search. It is a nice option to separate everything out, but I want the main search to be fully merged/all inclusive so you see everything that involves the keywords you’re looking for.
We only want to support new features that have been thought out to a good degree by their designers. Things that are seamless, or close enough.
The quick reply message box is freakishly small. 1680X1050 resolution and I’m typing in a box the size of a post-it. Well I’ll stop bitching seeing as it’s all new stuff not yet perfected like a fine art.
