I’m BACK with more useful info!

As a youngster I had TERRIBLE acne… it was depressing. Acne KILLS your game TWO FOLD! I was once refered to as " a ken doll with acne" - you have no idea how bad that pissed me off LOL.

In my search for a clear face i found vitamin B5…

Many studies have shown that Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) reduces acne… and can even get rid of it all together. B5 is great because you can not over dose it either… if you have too much…your body will flush it out.

What dosage would you recommend? This is going to vary from person to person… but I find that 10 grams is about right for most people.

NOTE* Acne may get worse for a week or so when taking B5 as it pushes the remaining oil to the surface of the skin. After that tho… your acne should start to clear up.

I am not kidding you… this stuff really works!

I have also used over the counter “acne treatments” - proactive solution - dishwashing soap… alcohol wipes… an electric pimple shocker lol… They all worked to an extent but not nearly as good as B5!

LASTLY… i suggest taking a daily shower (which i hope you do anyways…) and scrubing the affected area with an anti-bacterial soap and a wash cloth. Possibly shower 2 times a day… depending on your daily activities and the ammount you sweat. ALSO REMEMBER: Change your sweaty clothes ASAP.

Keep in mind that the recommended daily allowance of B5 is 5-10 milligrams, and even doubling that can cause severe diarrhea in some people.

So if you’re going to take 1 gram per day, make sure you don’t have any plans the first day you try it out. :wink:

I didn’t see anywhere in your post how long you have been trying mega doses of b5. I’d be curious to know the answer to this.

I tried the ten grams a day years ago. It’s worth pointing out the importance of taking the 10 grams in numerous doses during the day (at least 3, ideally 4 or more times.) If you take it all at once you are wasting your time and money because the body will only absorb so much at a time.

On the plus side it unquestionably works. Dramatically reduces oil production (sebum) in a manner similar to Acutane but cheaper and with far less potential complications.

On the negative side there does exist the potential for hair damage. My observations put it at around 20-25% of people doing this for several months started reporting hair damage. Most common was hair loss, either thinning or receding hair line. After about 5 months of doing b5 mega doses I started noticing white hairs and stopped immediately. Used to worry me a great deal until months after when I started seeing color towards the roots of hairs I had been pulling out. Really a shame since b5 worked better than anything prescription/non prescription I had ever tried.

It has been a few years since I did b5 so I don’t know the current state of b5 knowledge and if there was a way discovered to avoid the potential side effect. At the time I was trying all this biotin was being thrown around as a potential way to avoid hair damage. You may want to look into that just in case.

Also, Accutane (and by extension, large doses of B5) can permanently decrease the amount of oil your skin produces, which can lead to premature wrinkling. If aging is a concern and your acne isn’t the terrible scarring cystic acne, it may be worthwhile to just deal with it using gentler cleansers and creams.

First off good post. You can also use Organic Apple Cider Vinegar with the mother as a daily wash. It helps too. There is a post on here in the lounge about it.

good post, i’d just like to add that if you wanna get rid of all acne once and for all from the root, you should start with a healthy life style.

eat healthy food, fruit, vegetables, fibre.

sleep on time (VERY important), that means sleep early, get up even earlier, i used to sleep at 3am(due to uni work) and get up at 6am, on the weekend i would sleep till 11am!! lack of sleep and oversleep caused me to break out and lose my skin radiance, not to mention i got dark eye circles.

wash your face with gentle face wash, don’t scrub, it will aggrevate the acne, don’t squeeze the acne.

i also found benzyl peroxide worked extremely well, but it is a very STRONG product, it will make your skin burn and turn red initially, salicylic acid also worked quite well.

one more thing, exercise frequently, the sweat will help, the downside is that it will increase your test production and may give you some back acne :stuck_out_tongue:

Just a couple of notes to add.

WRT the B5: build up the dosage, starting about double the RDA [which the FDA sets conservatively enough that doubling it should do you no harm] and then work your way up slowly. My GF’s doctor recommended she boost her B5 intake to help w/ her cholesterol problem, and she overdid it [as usual] and wound up getting hives. Take it easy, and you can get up to severely stupid dosages.

Remember, that the only vitamins you can really OD on [as in kill yourself] are vitamins A & D [don’t eat polar bear or leopard seal liver when you’re lost in the arctic! You’ve been warned! ;)]

Pertaining to acne specifically:

Be aware to the potential for food allergies as a contributory factor! I’m not just talking about the traditional “chocolate” food issue here: my sister had a fairly bad acne problem in her teens. Turns out that the tomatos that she loved & ate constantly were the contributing factor. As soon as she cut back [none for a week or so until the skin started improving, and then only the normal “slice in a hamburger or salad” level] she no longer had the skin problem. Many people ignore environmental causes, thinking the problem is with themselves, when it isn’t, completely, but rather a combination of things.

All very good responses regarding mroe B5 information! I used B5 for about a month and stopped… and i’d restart as i needed too. Never had hair problems… yet.

Regarding multiple doses throughout the day… this is 100% correct. I should have mentioned that… thank-you for posting this info.

Also - regarding the diarhea… i’ve never had a problem nor have heard so but… throw caution to the wind here… and start your B5 slowly. I’d hate to hear of people needed to line their bathrooms with plastic all because of me LOL

I don’t think there’s a solution against acne that will work for everyone all the time, as acne surely has a lot of different causes. But B5 may work for a lot of people that didn’t succeed in getting rid of it.

I had very bad acne for a long time and nothing I tried really helped. Until I found that it was caused by dairy products (which I found out after going on a vegan diet for several years). After I stopped taking dairy products my acne vanished over the course of maybe two weeks and instantly reappeared as soon as I ate/drank something that’s based on milk. Nowadays it’s not as bad anymore - I guess not eating any dairy stuff for more than three years has desensitized (sp??) my immune system. But when I constantly consume dairy products over a longer time (say a month) acne begings to reappear and I start becoming sick. So I guess I’ll have to stay away from this stuff for the most part all of my life…

One problem with high doses of one vitamin of the B-complex is that it can (and will) reduce the absorption of all other B-vitamins. So if you take mega doses of B5 be sure to supplement with the whole B-vitamin-complex, too. Else you could end up with a deficiency in one of the other B’s! The problems others have mentioned when taking high doses of B5 could easily be caused by a deficiency of other B’s instead of the megadose B5 directly.

One thing that could also help is taking a zinc supplement - zinc is said to help healing inflammations and therefore helps healing acne, too.

i just quit eating sugar and candy and drinks with sugar and now i get less that 30 grams a day of sugar and it has helped better than any doctor has given me so far. i just got on accutane and the second day i had dry skin but it doesnt bother me that much. so yeah it can be something you eat as much as what you do.

Accutane worked for me.

And benzyol peroxide can cause premature aging of the skin so stay away from that
