There is a point to this story… please read on.
So, I went to my favorite fishing spot yesterday. So, right when I get out there, there’s one of the employees cleaning a bunch of big-ass Kingfish at the cleaning station. After about 5 minutes of NO bites on my shrimp, and seeing all the local fish going ape shit over the king carcasses that Clay’s throwing out there, I ask him if I could have the next carcass to cut up for bait. I was at least hoping to catch one of the Jacks that were out there. So, here I am cutting up this leftover carcass to use for bait, when I see what I, at first, believe to be a small shark out there. Obviously, this gets me all excited. I get out my “big pole” with the 65 pound braided line. (Big pole kinda makes you snicker, huh?) So I put a nice 2 ounce chunk of meat on a 7/0 circle hook, no weight, and toss it out there. I didn’t even have time to set my drag before the Tarpon grabbed it and gave it a quick tug to let me know he was there. So I take a step back from the edge of the seawall and yank back on my rod to set the hook. This pissed that fish off something bad. Again, I didn’t have time to set the drag on my reel before the fucker takes off. Speedy thought process was as follows:
Let the pole go, or hold on for dear life. Bear in mind, this is a $400 pole, so, obviously, I opt to hold on for dear life, and hope for the best. (with the ‘best’ being that I already had some of the tension released on my drag, and he could run around a bit to tire himself out, I reel him in, take a picture, and walk away from the catch of a lifetime with photographic proof. Well, apparently, I’m just not that fucking lucky. The drag was as tight as a virgin before prom night. fuck.
So me, my cell phone, smokes, money, glasses, pole, and ALL 4 BOTTLES of my to-go mones get dragged looney tunes style out into the water. I must have flown a good 4 feet away from the seawall before hitting water. Once in the water, I get dragged another 15 or so feet before the fucker finally wraps around a pole and snaps my line, leaving me to tread water with pockets full of now totally useless crap, and a well-salted $400 pole, with no prize fish on it. Talk about one fucked up fishing day. I’m just glad that there were people around to at least substantiate that I had a fish that large on my line, and that it wasn’t just me being my usual klutzy-ass self falling in the nasty intracoastal of my own faults.
The only reason I had all my mones on me in the first place was because we were going to the bar afterwards, and I wanted to be all good smelling when I got there, ya know?
So there’s gonna be some serious spawning going on, and I have to re-order!!! I already notice everyone treating me like a “regular Joe” again, and it kinda sucks!!! But, hopefully I’ll be able to afford to re-up soon… The To-go bottles I got were for trial purposes only… now that I notice how much differently I get treated with the mones, it’s hard going back to being just another guy without them!!!
