The comment strings are just comic gold. I think Dave Chapelle is on there.
This sounds similar to the book I’m reading by Haruki Murakami called “Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World: A Novel”. A scientist has developed a technique to remove sound from people and objects. It’s definitely worth the read.
I would love to bring my audio equipment in there!
Obviously these people have never meditated. Thats all you hear, the sound of your own body functioning. Meditate deep enough and you can hear the flow of your own blood.
I dont see how quiet could make people crazy in 45 minutes. Maybe extreme long periods of it but then again think about it, do deaf people get disorientated and have hallucinations ?
I think the reporter is exaggerating a bit. The room is cool though.
Tisha
I checked him out on Goodreads and read several quotes. I like his style very much. It sort of reminds me of Tom Robbins, but not as cynical.. more wistful, I guess. Thank you for mentioning him. ![]()
One place I worked in the '80s had such a chamber that was also used for our annual hearing tests. When it was not in use I would often go spend time in it during lunch break.
Interesting article, thanks for sharing ![]()
That’s cool, using an “anechoic chamber” to test products for sound! And using it for marketing makes sense. Anything to get an edge/be more appealing. It certainly wasn’t designed for people, lol! Actually 45 minutes is a long time under those conditions. Sounds more like torture to me, lol. Yeah, cool for about five minutes … then … >>>> LEMMEOUTTAHEEEEEERE!!! ![]()
I don’t think so because although they’re deaf, they still have their other senses/sensory input. However if you put a deaf person in a sensory deprivation tank, I suspect, being deprived of other sensory input, (just like hearing people), they would also become disoriented/hallucinate.
Ah, that reminds me of the Ken Russell film, Altered States, with William Hurt.
William Hurts character was inspired by the experiments conducted by John C. Lilly, a fascinating man, who first used the tank in 1954 in order to test the effects of sensory deprivation/perceptual isolation. I might also mention Lilly was friends with Timothy Leary which might explain why in some of his later experiments his subjects were also under the influence of hallucinogenics while in the tank.
William Hurt was also fulla schroom stew when he was in the tank, lol. He was “altered” all right. Jesus, Mary and Joseph. No wonder he was seeing God! ![]()

I can see quite a difference between how someone would be effected by and feel in the anechoic chamber (wooden sensory deprivation box) as opposed to the floating sensory deprivation tank. Compared to gently floating in a tank the box seems uncomfortable/claustrophobic/kinda harsh.
I can understand being intrigued and going in there out curiosity but how can you reach anything but an anxious state when you’re already going in under duress? Meaning you’re in a box feeling trapped and challenged to stay in there until you can no longer endure it! So, most likely you wouldn’t exactly be in the right frame of mind to begin with would you… and even if you were, evidently under those particular conditions, it quickly changes.
However, floaters find that after entering the tank they quickly become so relaxed that any fears disappear. Also the weightlessness effect and the absence of light give the floater a feeling not of being in an enclosed place but rather of being comfortably suspended in infinite space. Floating in a near gravity free state, in skin temperature salt water, in “tranquility” tanks, can be very pleasant indeed and has many therapeutic benefits both physically and mentally. Floating promotes tremendous muscle relaxation and helps the body to rapidly expel waste. It also speeds recovery from physical stress and often induces states of higher consciousness and a prolonged sense of well-being. ![]()
Mentally, floating eliminates external distractions and allows the floater to drop into a Theta state that can last for days. You do it gradually and as you become accustomed/acclimated to doing it, you can spend more time in the tank. Ain’t nobody gettin’ to a Theta state in that box, lol.

Bella
Like Bella, I’m going to jump on Tisha here too
. Yeah, its jump on Tisha day ![]()
I meditate at least 30-45 minutes every single day and while I can obtain a certain level of deepness there has never been a time of sensory deprived. If the fire alarm went off I’d hear it. I believe its vastly different from being deprived of all sound and site though. From what I understand you are in the dark. If you take a ping pong ball and cut it in half and then put it over your eyes it will create hallucination. Its a form of sensory deprivation too. When I use my mind machine after a little while it becomes difficult to not go psycho from the deprivation. I just don’t think meditation, for the vast majority of us, is even close to deprivation.
Remember when you locked me in the garage so you could have that all night fling with that guy you call your husband? I was in there 19 hours without food, water, not even a girl. It was complete torture and while I still had all of my sense intact it was cruel and unusual. What does this have to do with anything? Absolutely nothing, but I did want others to know the lengths you’ll go ![]()
I wasn’t jumping on Tisha, lol. Although I’m sure you enjoyed picturing that, you naughty naughty boy.
I was just trying to answer her question. Jeez, no wonder she locked you in the garage!
God and mankind knows Tisha’s perfectly jumpable. And if I swung that way, I’d certainly consider it, lol. Especially if we could hear your screams from the garage! ![]()
Bella
You ain’t kidding about that comment string Lol! I take it that you are a 'Chappelle’s show" fan? ![]()
That sounds cool you mentioning that reminds me of an episode of “buffy the vampire slayer” called hush the plot pertains to some demons arriving in Sunnydale who had the ability to nullify every person in that town ability to speak.
Yeah I bet some primo sounds can be produce in this room from your equipment. ![]()
When I meditate, I pay attention to my heart beat listening to it rhythmic sounds relaxes me and in turn slows it’s beat down making it more pleasant and relaxing to listen to I guess I am describing some kind of feedback loop or something.
Being in there would probably put me to sleep in 45 minuts Lol! ![]()
I looked this dude up seems like a real hip cat! ![]()
I can relate to some degree I used to eat lunch in a small vacant office on a regular basis at a former job.![]()
You bet Mickalia! ![]()
I guess you can say he was having an Umani party-a-thon! ![]()
I’ve seen this movie it was tremendously bizarre to me Probable because it was so out of my depth of understanding (I was kid when I have seen it) A shout out goes to that slice of holy Pete broaght to you by that man sized booger scene…
I watched all three parts of the rad video! Ya’ know those people being interviewed sure seem relaxed. ![]()
Geez Louise! Those (now defunct) isolation tank masks are gnarly. They look like they belong inside a bedroom secret cupboard. ![]()
This part was my favorite of that io9.com article: “The lack of a temperature differential plays with your ability to perceive where your body ends and where the water and air begin.”
Aside from the intriguing information on Isolation Tanks there is also some high brow self developement stuff in here. ![]()
Mr. Perry descriptions of how he felt after he left the Isolation Tank have parallels to what I have heard someone describe to me there experience when they come out of being hypnotized. I guess that should not be all too surprising considering both can put people in a theta state. I wonder if these two Theta inducing methodologies.
I never heard of “burn-out syndrome” before.
Better not let Steve scream! ![]()
Bella is not jumping on me, were just talking LOL
I guess I meditate deeper then most because I can turn off whats outside but I get what your saying. I have learned to turn off some senses and focus on one at a time. I have never been able to to let go of all of them though, that would be out of body. Astro travel I think they call it. If I ever get that deep my first trip will be to come over and jump on you ![]()
Tattle tale
Just for the record…
It was only 6 hours it just felt like 19. Sensory deprivation will make you lose sense of time. Oh and the door was open you could have just came out of the garage at any time. ![]()
Tish
I’m with Tisha I’d love some time in that room. I have SID (sensory integration disorder) and a special needs child, some real shut-down time would be welcome!
I think you and Bella both have the wrong image going through your minds compared to the image I have of Bella jumping on you…rawr ![]()
