It was Friday and I decided to fling caution to the wind by spraying 3 sprays of IJ from a to-go, plus 2 sprays of a 5:1 blend of Issey Miyake and NPA from another to-go.
First, a little background. Those of you who know me most likely know where I work. I’m not going to mention the name of the company any more and would ask those who know to refrain as well. Seems we’ve got peepers, and while a Google search of my screen name usually lands hundreds of technobabble results, I don’t want to run a risk. I’ll also try to find and edit any of my older posts that mention the company. Suffice it to say, it’s one of the country’s largest corporations.
Anyway, when I’m in work mode, I get extremely focused. In my head, I’m 10 steps ahead of what my hands are doing. My tools are organized in such a way that I don’t have to think to get what I need. I just reach for it. I have 3 distinct tasks that have to be performed to complete my job each day, and I have the process down to a science. I know what I’ll be doing at any given time.
Apparantly, the individual(s) who did this particular job before me were the type to sit around, take their sweet time, and hold pow-wows around the tool carts. To be frank, I don’t put up with that shit. I have a sense of urgency, and if you’re within 3 feet of my area and aren’t helping me in some way, you’re in my way and would be advised to move immediately, or get a 15lb torque wrench up-side the face bone.
Well, despite my protestations, the team leaders and their little lamprey fishy hangers-on still gather around my workspace to shoot the shit and generally be in my way. Tonight, I had to do almost twice my normal workload due to the first shift person not being in. Right before time to stop and clean up, I had about 10 minutes worth of work to do to finish something up. The way I was moving made it OBVIOUS that I had a sense of urgency about me, yet the dumbfucks insisted on being RIGHT THERE where I had to be to access my equipment. At first, I said “Guys, I’m trying to work here, would you mind…?” The te3am leaders just scoffed and grumbled, as if I was inconveniencing them. I just flipped out.
“GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY WAY!” I gritted loudly between my teeth. One of the TL’s, who wears fashions from Oshkosk, by gosh, flexed up on me and said “You better be joking.” I looked him dead in the eye, took a step towards him and said, “Or what? You’re gonna kick my ass or something? Get. The. Fuck. Out. Of. My. Way.” I can’t remember what he did, as I grabbed a drill, slammed the drawer shut, and went about doing my job. My manager came out and asked me “What was the deal with [Team Leader]?” I said “I’m trying to do my fucking job, and he’s loitering around my cart, in my area, and in my way. I asked him to move and when he didn’t, I said GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE WAY. He gave me some crap about ‘you better be joking’, so I said ‘What, you gonna kick my ass or something? Get the fuck out of here!’ This happens all the time with those guys, and it pisses me the fuck off!” I was raising my voice and after I said that, I resumed my work. A few minutes later, the manager, along with another manager from the area called me away from the job and gave me a verbal warning for insubordination and disrespecting a team leader.
Needless to say, I won’t be wearing that combo to work any time soon, but the first chance I get, I’m speaking with my union steward about the bullshit way that was handled. Yeah, I was pissed, and yeah I flew off the handle, but it was justified and the fact that I got in trouble for… I dunno, having a sense of urgency is absolute bullshit.
