For those of you who are in the states, and grew up in the 90s, do you remember any TV shows that were a part of your childhood?
For instance, I was on youtube the other day and found the Reading Rainbow Theme song intro lol. I remember that black guy talking about books and stuff.
Old Nickelodeon shows like All that, legends of the hidden temple, adventures of pete and pete, kablam!! , gumby, angry beavers…
You’d be AMAZED at how those shows are making a comeback around Halloween where i live. Theres a HUGE halloween bash on Franklin Street at UNC, where college kids across the state come out and deck themselves out in costumes that probably took a month to create. But you see groups of sorority girls walking around as Blue Barracudas or Purple Parrots all the time, as well as a few Quailmen, some ghostbusters… i even saw a reptar once. It’s a whole bunch of fun going out to bars and sitting down with Princess Jasmine on one side and Freddy Krueger on the other. Unfortunately there has been some gang trouble coming out of Durham for the last two years, so they put measures out (such as restricted parking for non-locals and a Franklin Street curfew) to make other college kids not want to drive several hours to get there. Oh well…
I remember hearing about those when i was growing up and have heard several references in the shows i DID watch, but it was a wee bit before my time. One decade does make a difference in TV programming. But i’m going to go back and watch the A-team on that site of yours, cause i’ve heard it was GREAT!
Oh yeah, how else would kids know that dropping anvils on their head hurt, that you can fly if you don’t look down, and fireworks blow all your fur off.
Some of my faves from childhood were F-Troop, McHales Navy, and The Downfall of LBJ with Walter Cronkite. Well actually the last one was a reality series that was originally titled The CBS Evening News but it held everybodies attention for a couple of years. Oh yeah, fave cartoon…Underdog.
Renny, I remember Cronkite, how about Huntley and Brinkley?
Bella, you said NOTHING about Clutch Cargo (with those crazy live-action mouths), the Twilight Zone or Secret Squirrel! ( I know, there was too much stuff on TV back then to name in one post.)
How about those really weird, single season TV shows like My Mother The Car, It’s About Time or Captain Action? Why can I remember that totally oddball information (in detail!), yet have no clue where my car keys are at this very moment? (OK, I know where my keys are, but you get the idea!)
Yes, I realize that the stuff I’m naming is prehistoric compared to the '90s!
Ok, im sorry Robbie, but there is a very good reason that the show My Mother the Car wasnt mentioned as part of fond childhood television memories… and i’ll give you two guesses why that is.
Jeeze, now ya got me thinkin’…I’ll have to get back to you on that one…hmmm…
Clutch Cargo was the oddest animation…lol…and I did remember Secret Squirrel…so there. I was trying to hold it down to a dull roar and only named a few favorites. But you had ta git me all fired up!
First of all there is noooo comparison. Yesteryear’s animation is far superior to the stuff you see today. Sorry, but it pales in comparison.
OK Robbie…you asked for it. Maybe I’ll forgive you for dragging me into prehistoric times…maybe…lol.
I should’ve clarified, I didn’t mean MMTC is a favorite, I am wondering why I’m tortured by being able to remember it. Though as a kid, I was crushed to discover the cancellations of Captain Action (“What we need is action! A - C - T - I - O - N! Action”) and It’s About Time (“It’s aout time, it’s about space, it’s about time to slap your face!” --that was our kid-twisted lyrics.) I’d probably be horrified if I saw those shows today.
I just realized that I’ve combined some memories. The show was called “Captain Nice,” but there was a Captain Action toy. And “A-C-T-I-O-N!..” Was from “Mr. Terrific.”
I love to get you fired up!
Well, Clutch Cargo, those old Marvel superhero cartoons (Iron Man, Thor, Submariner, Hulk and Captain America) and some others had the most limited of animation, but overall, I agree.
Also, the writing back then was far superior to what’s out there today. You look at those old Jonny Quest episodes and they play like Shakespeare compared to today’s stuff.
You remember these…
Klyde Crashcup (and Leonardo)
Penelope Pitstop
The Beatles cartoons
The Dick Tracy show
Fantastic Voyage (the cartoon-- with Busby Birdwell)
The Mighty Hercules (had a centaur named Newton)
Roger Ramjet
Tennessee Tuxedo
Mighty Mouse
Underdog
Hillbilly Bears
And other TV stuff…
Evil Roy Slade (made for TV movie)
12 O’Clock High
Girl From U.N.C.L.E.
Marcus Welby
Secret Agent
McHale’s Navy
Please Don’t Eat The Daisies
Ghost And Mrs. Muirer
Branded
Green Hornet
Burke’s Law
The Big Valley
Petticoat Junction
Gidget
Here Come The Brides
Name of the Game
Land of the Giants
Time Tunnel
The Invaders
Rat Patrol
The Carol Burnett Show
Oh man, I could name more, but this has already turned into the “Robbie is creepy” thread!
I didn’t. I had such a crush on Shari Lewis as a little kid. But then, I was also a sucker for Agent 99, Morticia Addams and Mrs. Peel. I’ve always had a thing for dark-haired ladies (though Shari was light-haired) and I was apparently a horndog as a kid.
Ok, now you two are just trying to show off. I’m beginning to wonder if you both watched hours and hours of television as kids, or just went online and googled old tv shows. Either way, im kinda impressed and just a little bit intimidated.
So, this may be a bit off the thread of conversation, but hearing about iron man and other superheroes brought back a question i had from my childhood, and this is it:
“What in the world was up with Aquaman?”
I mean, superheroes were being created with super strength, the ability to fly, heat ray vision, magical rings, etc. etc… you name it, they had it. And aquaman… gets the ability to talk to fish? I mean, come on. Thats just a wee bit harsh, dont you think? Whenever superhero crossovers happened in the comics, i can think of ONE time he came into play (when they had to go down to atlantis), and even then he played a MINOR role… on his ONLY HOME TURF. That should say something.
Holy Crap! ‘Love! American Style’. It’s no freakin’ wonder some of us grew up with no game. WKRP was more high school age for me but it remains probably my top funniest show of all time. Johnny Fever Rules! I think the Turkey Drop episode should be the National Thankgiving Day TV Show and run at least twice on each network every year.
Unfortunately, I remember all that. I even left out a lot of other shows because it already looked scary! Yeah, I guess I watched a crazy amount of TV as a kid, looking at the list, I’m a bit stunned that I recall all that stuff.
Well, Aquaman was DC’s answer to Namor, the Submariner, and where Namor had several hooks (no pun intended, Renny) to his character, Aquaman was just …lame.
Great clip! Renny, on the radio yesterday, they mentioned that somebody started a real TV channel with the call letters “WKRP.” It was pointed out that WKRP was a radio station, not a TV station and someone also mentioned “Don’t they get WKRP stood for CRAP!”
