Been discussed with some friends at the pub recently, and we came to an agreement that trimmed is the best way but not shaved.. as that was just considered wrong..

Shaved male parts is too much like a pre-pubescent boy (the same reason I do not prefer a shaved woman).
“trimmed” is nice in that it allows for scent and a natural lubrication. At the very base, it adds texture to the deepest part of your stroke as well.
