pheremone to calm babies?

I am going to be sitting for my first grandson, aged eight months, who lives in Alaska. He will not know me and my daughter-in-law tells me he is scared of new people and she has never left him with a sitter. I am worried that the first time she goes out she will call here and he will be screaming in the background and she will panic and cut short her first time away from him!:stuck_out_tongue: Please send me suggestions to use on myself beforehand to give all of us a great visit. They will be here two weeks :smiley:

Hi Carol. Nice question. The answer is that using pheromones around babies is not the best of ideas.

Aggie has it right.

The best thing you can do with your grandson is to have your mother bring an item, like a pillow case, sweater, or tshirt that she used. These items will have her pheromones on them and will naturally comfort your grandson when you are sitting with him alone.

I’ve heard experts recommend not weaning any perfume or cologne around infants for various reasons.

But that being said once he’s older if you search Jasmin’s posts she mentions some molecules that work well and what to avoid.

Key words in John’s post: once he’s older

Good to know,I didn’t have any idea that it could be harmful and glad I asked. I will ask her to leave one of her shirts with him. Wish me luck. However your posts lead me to think about this, if it is unwise to wear pheremones around infants, from posts I read, many people wear them daily and may be parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents, who are wearing them when they are around their own kids, when they babysit or even when they just wear them out in public when meeting neighbors and interact with infants. That leads me to believe that at least a few people may have picked up a baby when wearing pheremones. Given that I was not going to spray it on the baby, just pick up a baby later on in the day when I was already wearing them, and given that I read that pheremones were something that would not be absorbed by skin, what are the risks? Does any one here have specific information? I am not going to go out of my way to avoid kids, I pass out lots of hugs during the day with friends and neighbors kids. Are the risks the same risks that any perfume would offer? Is it just a general guideline-offered as advise to be on the safe side, or a specific risk? Is it fine to wear them but not to pick up a baby and hold them near the application?
I will certainly not wear them when babysitting, and wonder if that is enough of a precaution and I can continue to wear them during the day even though I am around children and will occasionally pick up infants. The pheremones I own are IH, shine, IO and IS/B. It would be silly to over react about this, I just want common sense guidelines. Now that we have this topic, is there a chemist who can post about this? I wouldn’t want this topic to be the cause of any misunderstanding or to worry people when there may be no reason at all to do so. John, do you have an idea about what age it would be Ok to hold a child when wearing these pheremones, or can you pass this question along to someone who can write more about this? I am sure many parents would like to know more. Thanks!

Just to clarify,Aggie,I am not spraying pheremones on children!!! I am just looking for common sense tips. I am just out in public wearing them and wanted to wear one which is soothing and not unsettling to an infant, so I would smell calming to him. I wasn’t going to spray them when around him! And I would appreciate the help. Honestly I almost felt ashamed when i read your response, as if I had posted that I wanted to harm my grandson! What exactly do you mean by once he is older? Any specific age? Have you read any guidelines that you can refer me to? Thanks. I am just very new to this, thought of them as harmless, just trying to learn.

You can hold children while wearing pheromones it is not harmful. Certain more volatile aggressive mones like anone can make them nervous but that is high in mens products.

However the first few 3 to 6 months are in a time of bonding with important adults in a child’s life. Mom, Dad, grandparents. Babies bond and identify will all there senses more so until they become verbal and develop visual identification. They rely more on pheromone bonding then adults. So you want to go natural so they can bond with you and not with a formula.

Kids your just taking care of periodically or in passing generally react well to mones. Its not that they are harmful to them but it can be harmful to your natural bonding process with them.

My advice is this… If you see your grandson everyday once he recognizes your voice and you by sight well (around 3 to 6 months) then you can slowly use mones and see how he reacts. IO IH and Ishine are all fine. By then he will have built up a trust and comfort level with you.

If you dont see him daily then it may take longer to bond.

You will not harm him just by wearing them so dont be worried on that count. I have worn mones around babies for years and they tend to react so well around me it can surprise the parents sometimes. I frequently here things like “he/she usually doesn’t like strangers”. Of course I am not trying to develop a natural bond with them though.

Tisha

Oh, thank you so very much Tisha!:)I really appreciate your post. Unfortunately I live in Maine and they live in Alaska and I am not able to see him often. I just wanted to make it easier on him when he is left with me, He has never been left with a babysitter before, and I am not around him enough to have bonded with him naturally. I just want the visit to go well for us all and to give my daughter some time she can go off with friends here and not worry about him, he is her first child and she is alone with him all day. My son, her husband, is in Afghanistan and she is alone on base without family. She is flying in this weekend to visit. Thank you! Can’t wait to see them  My daughter-in-law and son were childhood sweethearts and went to the local schools together.

glad that you didn’t think I would spray
a baby
with pheremones Aggie!
you made my day and you made me laugh out loud too.

i’ve thought about this topic quite a bit but from a much different perspective. i’ve worn some type of pheromone around kids for at least 6 or 7 years now and would have written a long post about it but tisha has beat me to it.

afaic, a and b-nol and ifm have had a hugely positive impact on my ability to score with their mothers haha. seriously though i don’t think those are necessarily physical pheromones, meaning you can spray it on a pillow case or a mosquito net or a light bulb and it won’t bother anything. inhaling exhaust fumes from the car in front of you may perhaps be less healthful, i don’t know i’m not a doctor.

if you want to bond it’s a different matter but that’s not necessarily a bad thing either. i don’t have any peer reviewed studies but i do have kids.

lol partly related story… while wearing A314 I was speaking to a mother and the kid about 5-6yo started telling me about her day at school and all this stuff like I was her dad or something

Pheromones never cease to amaze me
